Broken brushes, broken brush wires, worn slip rings and voltage regulator problems are common on these generators and can cause the kind of shut down problem that you have. As mentioned before if the generator does not put out AC voltage the engine won't keep running. The brushes and slip rings are inside a cover on the end of the generator that is under the bus. As usual be very careful when working under the bus and behind the generator! The offer still stands on a schematic if you need one.

John,

This link that I already posted in message #3 of this thread contains wiring diagrams;

Please do me a favor and check them to see if they are the same as what you have, or if yours are of a better quality, if yours are better please send a copy to me at iamflagman@aol.com so that I can add yours to that file.

Default Kohler Generator

There is a small control box, about 8 inches square, located next to the generator. On the outside of the small box you should have a start switch, preheat switch etc.

Inside you will find a number of relays, 4 I believe. There is one which is a plastic see through type, this is the 110 volt relay.( should mention what the relay voltage is)

There are two switches for the oil pressure, one is a normally open contact, and when the engine builds up pressure it closes, thus holding in the shutdown solenoid. The second "switch" is not really a switch but a variable resistance device which will change with pressure thus giving you a different value on your gauge.

One thing, which just came to mind - the shutdown solenoid is a two stage device, it has a pull-in coil and a holding coil.
  1. if you can pull it in by hand and the generator will continue to run then the hold in coil is no good.
  2. if you start the engine and the solenoid pulls in, then drops out, it could be the holding coil.
Now, as far as drawings/schematics go, make sure you have the right one, otherwise you will be really on a witch hunt.
In my info which I will be sending John Finn, it will include a number of the different drawings as well as all of the manuals.

the regulator is on the back of the genny, behind a louvered cover.
slide the genny out, then you can sit up behind the genny and remove the louvered cover (4 bolts) the regulator is behind that cover, and so are the slip rings and brushes.

I have a few more questions.
1. What is the CR 110 relay and where is it located as mention by Bill?
2. Is the low oil pressure switch supposed to be grounded? When I tested it with the test light, the light came on. I tried taking the wire off but that didn't change anything as it still wouldn't keep running.
Hi Jeff,

Randy gives a description of where the slip rings, brushes and voltage regulator are in post #33. See Bill's post #32 for the location of relay CR (the 120 volt relay).

NOTE: The schematic shows that the Low Oil Pressure switch (L.O.P.) is a normally closed switch so it does check to ground with no oil pressure - it opens after the engine has oil pressure.

I sent John Finn a PDF of some generator schematics that I have. If he posts it you can compare them with what you have.

If you have no voltage on the meters and the light in the start switch is not coming on then it's likely pointing to a generator output problem.
