Like you, I have not had the nerve to wait for the automatic retract to do its job. I asked that the setting be set to 17 mph. The patio awning sets sail lower than that but still holds itself in place despite bouncing around. I just remember last summer seeing a nice Prevost with its self-retracting awnings twisted along side the coach. In that case, a fast squall-like gust did them in. Not enough time to retract. One day, I will let it work its majic.

A while back, some of you asked how we attached the large patio awning to the goat rail. The rail is not sufficient to handle the awning extended while it bounces in the breeze. Here is how we did it.

That looks like it should have no problem bracing up the goat rails on your 'Bird, nice job. I also moved your post over to the original thread so that it will be a follow up to the original topic.

I thought I would bring the subject of the auto rectract back up as there was no response to my question last year, it must have slipped through the cracks:
![]() >>>Our 2000 Lxi has a Girard supposedly with auto retract. There is an anometer on the roof, but no gauge inside to tell you what the wind speed is. I can't find anything that looks like it can set the wind speed rate for retraction. Does anyone know how this is controlled? Also, is there a way to connect a gauge to the existing anometer so that we can see how fast the winds are blowing?

Or in other words, when you slow to 17 MPH, the awnings deploy. Work in tandem with the retarder?

Actually, Girard Systems is in California. I did some research and found the following: Girard Systems 1361 Calle Avanzado San Clemente, CA 92673 Toll Free: 800.382.8442 Local: 949.259.4000 Fax: 949.276.5500 Email: sales@girardrv.com Web: www.girardsystems.com I spoke to someone in their tech. dept. He says that there is a box with a dial on it usually located somewhere close to the anemometer. You can test the automatic retraction by turning the anemometer with a drill or using a blower. Then the sensitivity can be adjusted on the dial. I am guessing that this dial is behind my gauges over the door. Does anyone know for sure before I starting taking things apart?

To answer my own question: Yes, the grey control box is behind the altimiter above my door. The only drawback is that the "dial" control is inside the grey box. So if you want to change the sensitivity of your auto-retracting awning, you have to take everything apart. The dial is in km/hr and runs from 20-50km/hr. I sat on the roof with a hairdryer set on low & high while my son turned the dial. We couldn't clock the windspeed, but when the setting was adjusted to 50km/hr (roughly 31miles/hr) I had to run my fan on high to get the awning to retract. So to be safe, I set the dial at its most sensitive setting. The anemometer was still spinning pretty fast when the awning retracted. I would rather it come in early than get ripped off!
