Default wiring,batterys,alternators,bring em on!

Aaron:
Glen has brought up a lot of good points, since he owns one of them, he has a good understanding.

A very good replacement for the Redi-line, battery boilers, oops I mean battery chargers is an inverter/charger. Ensure that the charger is a multi stage charger - very important for the life of the batteries.

Talk to Randy, he has a pretty good inverter/charger for sale, it is the modified sine wave, and it is generally good for most equipment other than the electronic equipment. A small sine wave unit can be purchased seperately if required for such applications.

Batteries - well this is a large topic. Trojan T105 or T145 are probably the best buy for the money, these have uncycled lead in it and they do last longer. The lower cost 6 volt batteries are still good batteries and for the price, it just might pay to have them replaced at an earlier date.

I believe this is all as it should be. Ive cleared one thing up. The generator uses a small charger to charge its own battery, this is what is out. The inverter has two or three fans one is not working. Ill investigate this when we get there. We have the alternator to replace. Thank you to everyone who has replied. aaron

Aaron:
Does the fellow have a schematic for the generator charger?
If not, here under files, you can search for it. There is complete manuals for both the Kohler generator and Perkins engine.
You will have to determine which wiring you have on your coach, I believe there are 4 different types, and one is with the charger.

More shall be revealed when we are on the ground in Phoenix. The shop where the coach is will not provide a parts list I believe because we are going to do the work ourselves. Such is life. It is the beginning of our great adventure. Probably better that we resolve this ourselves with these resources so we are more self reliant on the road. I will contact Randy when we are ready. This forum is a godsend..aloha aaron

Hey Shane.. stupid question may.. so I have six 12 v Batteries in my coach, you mention above you have six 6v batteries. I thought it was the volts that drove the starter to kick the engine.. with 6v batteries I assume that's wrong?

Thanks...
Rob

Rob,

Many of us use six volt instead of 12 volt batteries, these deep charge golf cart batteries have more storage capacity. The sixes' are wired in series to make 12 volts,

Thanks Bill, that makes sense.. is it more about the storage capacity and keeping a charge longer than it is cranking power? I sure wish my bird had separate coach and engine cranking batteries...Thanks

Rob,

Some 'Bird owners have done just that, although mine is an FC model I have both a Main Engine battery and a separate bank of 6 volt House Batteries. You will also see that I have added battery disconnect / cutoff switches to each of them.

I think that there are some PT owners that have also done similar modifications to their 'Birds.

There is a lot of good information about batteries and related items that can be found at Wanderlodge Owners Group > Links, Files, Old Yahoo Forum Database and Downloads > Downloads & Files > Batteries, Inverters, and Solar Panels

Hey yall found am amazing alternator claims 80% eff thats 20% better than the average alt. Its part wound part permanet magnet makes 240 amps @ 1650, 255 amps @1800 @80%eff and 325 amps @6000 it has three internal cooling fans is available in j 180, pad and t mount.

I plan on running one of these to charge house batteries off of the genny crankshaft, pullied up to 1800 rpm with the engine just at idle as it only needs 6 hp to produce 255 amps.

After several years of looking this is the best alt Ive found. Check it out.

Good link Darren,

Did you happen to get any pricing? I printed out the web site info and will be reading it a little later.

Thanks
