That depends on where on I-5 you want to end up. Route 20 (at Ukiah) goes through the Clear Lake area and will bring you to the town of Williams at I-5. If you are going up through redwood country, then Route 299 is the best route (you will be driving along the Trinity River canyon) and it will bring you to I-5 at Redding. I would say that Route 20 is easier (they tend to have curves that have a wider radius and less steep) and you will cross the Coast Range. I've driven them many times in coach and tractor trailer...both are easily doable. What ever you do, do NOT take Route 36 from near Eureka to Red Bluff, CA...you will have white knuckles .

I live just N of SF and drive my bird AROUND SF often. I take highway 12 east from Petaluma to Lodi on I 5 It is a route trucks use to avoid the Bay Area. Take hwy 12 east to I 80 east ( only about 3 miles on 80 ) then back onto 12 east to Lodi. It is about 2 hours from 101 to I 5. It is a two lane hwy that is fairly flat. Easy driving in my opinion. Take care and enjoy the ride.

We take 299 when we need to head east, as it saves a lot of miles, but I never look forward to it. 4 passes between Arcata and Redding. the second to the last one (Oregon Mountain) you have 8% uphill for quite a bit. The last one (Buckhorn) the downhill used to be 5 miles of 6% downhill, with lots of tight bends signed at 20mph.

Headed to Casper we got our first look at the newly straightened roadway, with its wide shoulders. It is now 4 miles of 8% downhill, with the slowest bend signed at 30.

If we are going south we use Highway 20. Headed north we've crossed I think all of the 9 or so significant possibilities between Crescent City and the Columbia River, including a few times each way on US199, but by far the easiest is Oregon 38 east from Reedsport.
