Bo Diddley died today.
he was 79 years old and lived down the road from me a few miles,he was a very good guy,and gave away most of his earnings to other people.
he was also a junkman,he had about 50 cars in his yard and lived in a couple of old mobile homes.
he loved to work on old cars.

Yeras ago when he did those Nike shoe adds on TV he took alot of his pay in Nike shoes,he took the shoes to the local schools and gave them away to anybody that needed them.

I played in a 10 piece rock band in my very early years before the Beatles and was fortunate enough to play a gig where he was the feature and we were the front band. I also had the opportunity to play on stage before or with other acts. Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, and others of the day. I even had the opportunity to meet and talk with the Late and Great Daddy Ray Charles. What a life I have had.
It would be fun to do it again. That is one of the reasons I cannot hear and am nuts. lol

While he is not exactly family right here, but related to me, my younger (55) brother Ed,
http://edfinn.com/biography.html worked with the a lot of the old bands while they toured in their later years, he is now a private instructor for string instruments and also a teacher at GIT / MIT Guitar Institute of Technology and Musicians Institute of Technology in Los Angeles, he's a pretty cool dude in my opinion. Ed still tours with Roger Williams of "Autumn Leaves" fame. Roger who is in his 80's still is going strong http://mrpianotoday.com/biography.html

Ed might have crossed paths with Leroy at one time or another, as he played for years up and down the east coast.

YES, unlike old baldy here, Ed does still have a lot of hair.

I made a living playing drums when I was younger. Believe me, unless you are drinking heavily, the girls don't get prettier at closing time. By then the pretty ones are long gone.

Bo was a musician who struck new ground, his own ground. He was unique. I doubt there is anyone who lived during that time who doesn't recognize his name and his sound. From Randy's comments he was unique and generous in his personal life as well. He will be missed.

I never liked Acid Rock, Blues/Jazz/Classical guitar was more my thing but on the wilder side I use to disarm bombs and I have been known to fish with dynamite! I have set off pyrotechnics at concerts and tons of fireworks for the Braves home games. What'd you say? Huh! Now I sell other peoples stuff at auction with a PA blarring in my ears all day! What woodja-gibme?

Saw this post and had this to add. We used to go to the custom car shows at Cobo Hall in Detroit in the 60's. Once saw The Bob Seeger System open for Bo Diddley on the stage at the car show on a Saturday night. Bob and Bo jammed for a while when Bo's set was about over. It was pretty cool. Bob Seeger threw posters in the crowd and I had one for Bo and one for Bob but over the years they got lost. Bob Seeger looked like a kid next to Bo, and he was mentoring Bob as they played. Bill, Thanks for sharing. I miss these old guys alot. Got to see Muddy Waters twice and he is quite the performer. Saw Mighty Joe Young in the 70's with I think Luther Allison in some little college in NH on the way back to Ohio from Bar Harbor on bikes. We were riding by at dusk and heard the music over our Harleys so stopped and caught most of the show. Stage was set up on a flatbed semi trailer. The good old days! I saw Luther Allison at a quarry near Bowling Green, Ohio in the mid 70's. That man could play the guitar! I am disturbing alot of cobwebs in my memory. Great memories. Rick in Ohio

Lots of us old f..ts "came of age" with Bo Diddley in the early 60's. Sad, he was one of my favorites and have a lot of his songs on our I-pod. His legend will live on forever.
