I am having a problem with my Kohler overheating. It ran for about 10 minutes and got up to 220 then the safety shut it down. I let it cool down for several hours and now it will not restart. It turns over fine but won't continue to run unless I hold the start switch. Any suggestions?
Does the Kohler have a fan? If so, where is it located, and how do I get to it? I can't see or hear a fan running and that would explain why its overheating. Thanks

The PTs have a center generator in the front of the coach on a slide out. The fan and radiator is usually in the street side compartment directly below the driver's seat. (If your coach is like mine, but mine is a decade+ newer.)
The symptom sounds like the fan motor that drives the squirrel cage fan has quit. (That's what happened to me and I had similar symptoms.) You'll need to find a replacement motor -- these are 220 volt AC motors driven off the generator. I removed the fan assembly, took it to an electric motor place, and they located a suitable replacement, and rebalanced the fan (a good idea). I then re-installed it above the radiator. (I took the opportunity to clean the radiator -- but there was only a little build up of dust that I hosed out.) |

I used that style of fan when I upgraded my Perkins / Marathon 15K genset, you can see the part numbers for the fan and motor by going to;
NEWER 'BIRD STYLE DOWNDRAFT RADIATOR FAN INSTALLATION.jpg Johnstone Supply is a wholesale national chain, having stores throughout the USA. There is much more information about the Perkins powered generators by going to; Wanderlodge Owners Group > Links, Files, Old Yahoo Forum Database and Downloads > Downloads & Files > Perkins Genset Engine

Hi guys, I do believe the radiator on a 84 pt is behind the grille and is belt driven , so I would make sure you have plenty of water and no leaks and the belt is on and tight!

If it was running and got up to 220 degrees then that means it is putting out voltage and the safety circuits are working. Check the circuit breakers first, then see if there is a reset button on the front of the control box in the generator. Then try and start it from the control box and see if the fan turns over when you first press the button if it does the fan is good. If it still does not start replace the Perkins thermostat.

if you look at the pic of this coach you can see there is no grille on the side, so its doesnt have an electric fan, I believe the radiator is behind the front grille and and has a belt driven fan

Hi Jeff,
If you don’t have a schematic for your Kohler generator I can email you one.

Jeff,
I have IR air compressors at work, which also have a similair safety setup with the high water temp. shutdown. I have in the past, had to replace the temp. shutdown sensor, only after one use. Parts told me this was not uncommom. It should be easy to test it with an ohmmeter.

Sounds silly but if the fan is working did you check to see if the radiator coil is cloged? I had to clean mine last summer and fixed a simular problem.
