Exclamation Acronyms and Abbreviations usage in posts

Acronyms, initialisms, and alphabetisms are abbreviations that are formed using the initial components in a phrase or name.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acronym_and_initialism

Am I the only one that seems to be noticing the use of more acronyms, or abbreviations in the messages being posted on the forum lately. It seems that the upsurge of Blackberries and other types of new style cel phones that are being promoted and their use in text messaging, has increased the use of text message type acronyms used to describe our problems and solutions.

There are people out there that have to have the very latest in gadgets and technology to make either their life easier, or they really need them for their work and then there are those, like a good friend of mine that........GASP!..........don't even want a cel phone and here on the forum we have members that cover every aspect of the spectrum and not everybody is currently into the new technology, nor do some of them want to go that far, but they are interested in trying to help others and also pick up a few tips that they can use along the way.

When posting a new thread, or a reply keep in mind that maybe there is a newcomer that could use this information to help them out either now, or when someone does a search on the topic in the future and how we compose our Questions and Solutions has a great impact in how it is understood by all of the forum members. Are we in that much of a hurry that we can't take the time to type out the whole word, or at least explain what the acronym stands for in our first post in a given thread, then a person can understand what we are talking about?

Maybe we are used to using them in our jobs, or our hobbies, but does that mean that everybody on the forum will understand what we are talking about and if they don't, some people will just not ask about them and maybe they are the ones with the solution to our problem, but they don't totally understand what we are talking about.

This isn't completely new, 26 years ago I used to get Honey Do notes left by my last wife who was a nurse, sometimes using medical acronyms, but that gave me an excuse of "But HONEY, I didn't understand what you meant" for not completing the task, but that didn't always work either

So the next time you want to enter a acronym in your post on the forum, think back to when you didn't understand what you are about to type meant, it can make understanding a problem or a solution easier for someone else.

If you either want to add to the list, or find out what an acronym, or abbreviation used on the forum means, check out;

Yes, but then they just ***umed that everyone would know what it meant

Seriously though I doubt if I'm the only one and this should be thought about when composing a post here on the forum. It only takes a few seconds to to explain things.............that's what Randy has to do

John

I grew up in military and use acronyms by default, anyone and everyone please let me know when I slip. I do not do the texting short dialect as of yet. On a seperate note. My significant other gives me less input for driving then your dog. She does not have the miles under her belt in her defense.

Good one John. I like that. Actually it stands for Tear Up for Arse Wipe. I had a rubber stamp TUFAW and when I came across something someone on my staff had produced that merited special treatment I pulled out the stamp. After I retired from the service I gave the stamp to Tommy Two Shoes who still has a large staff. I hope he doesn't have to use it very often.
