Hi all, I am currently looking at purchasing a clean, gently used '85 PT36 that has a 6V92 with 90,000 miles on it. My brother in law who owns a Prevost, also has spare remanned 8V92 500hp Silver Edition along with a fresh transmission for it. He ended up buying the newer Prevost and has the fresh 8V92 in a crate that he will not use. I could probably get from him at a great deal. My question is, can the 6V92 be replaced with the 8V92 without a lot of modifications? Between he and I, we could do this swap ourselves at his shop....just curious on if a swap to the bigger engine could be done.
My wife and I are excited about being Bluebird owners and I plan to do all of my own maintenance since I am a car and motorcycle guy that has built hot rods and performance engines since I was young (glad I payed attention to dear ol Dad's wrenching skills! ). Thanks for any info or advice you can give me.

I certainly have not changed one out. Just thinking out loud which gets me in a jamb from time to time lol one would think there is room for the swap. One challenge would be converting to DDEC if that is what the one in the crate is. ??????? I don't think the 85 is DDEC controlled.

A real man wouldn't think twice. Why ain't you working on it already?? Only way it could be better would be with a 13 sp OD. Probably stick out the back a little but that's what sheet metal shops are for. BIG radiator required.

This question has come up several times over the years and if I recall correctly you cannot swap for an 8V. I believe there is a length issue and starting in '85 I believe, some of the PT's were a bit longer in the engine area to make room for the 8V. You might do a search through the archives and find the previous threads concerning this. Randy, do you recall this from the various previous WL discussion groups in the past? Now I could be wrong, since my gray matter doesn't fire quite like it used to, but I am pretty sure you will have to live with the 6V.
