Asbestos mitigation
To anyone and everyone out there in WOG,

I recently had the “pleasure” of removing the microwave in our PT35. While the physical removal was straightforward, I encountered the asbestos wall insulating sheets under the stainless panels necessitating proper cleanup and disposal. My question(s) to y’all is, has anyone done a thorough examination of sources of asbestos in our busses and potential levels of contamination? Case in point, the stove panels. The asbestos there was not encapsulated and the panels, while not extremely friable, did shed fibers. Having been there for 30+ years being bounced around, it is very likely that fibers have shed into the bus and have been spread around. I am very curious what it would take to thoroughly clean/remove any contamination and what other potential sources need to be investigated.

Your commentary is deeply appreciated.

Best method is to paint it with a brush and cover it back up.
Could be what happened to LRon Hubbard in his '82

Yeah.... what Greg said ! The horrors of asbestos apply to those working in confined areas for years and years. That In-and-Out burger is going to kill you long before mesothelioma .

At least mine is an ‘83, can’t be dead L. Ron’s. Just trying to be careful working on this relic, it’s not like I’m going to lick the stuff or anything.

Did you have it tested?

I never considered asbestos being in these old things. Does anyone know when they stopped?

Hi Tom, we’re not far away in Bonney Lake. I’ve done extensive work on my 82 PT40 but have not encountered asbestos yet. Most of the interior is or was original when I bought it, much of it is now updated.

Some details of work done on mine here: http://www.jimphoenix.com/1982-blueb...odge-interior/

How long have you had your PT35?

I have not found any in both of mine

Have changed my micro out also.
No asbestos in the area also.:)

We’ve only had the bus since November, kinda bought it on a winger. We saw one at a festival, loved it, and then tripped over an orphan needing a home 2 weeks later. The asbestos I found was thin semi-rigid sheets as insulation behind stainless panels under the microwave above the stove and on the adjacent bulkhead. The panel over the stove had to be removed to access the bolts holding the microwave in. Looked like asbestos to me and confirmed by someone who knows with certainty. I’m not super worried about it, just wondered if I might find some elsewhere. I think I read that some might be found under the panel under the bed, over the engine compartment. I have not looked there yet.

Oh, and Jim, I’ve seen your website, it is quite fascinating. I wish I had your talent.
