Trailer light hook up - TRAILER PLUG WIRING

I have been towing my boat trailer with my 97 Wonderlodge. Bought the converter plug to go from the round 7 pin down to the flat 5 pin hookup that the boat trailer has on it. When I first used it the lights worked but the signal were opposite of what the coach was doing (confused some people behind me I bet). Was looking into fixing that when last weekend I noticed that none of the trailer lights were on when the headlights were on. When I hit the brakes they would come on but when the brakes came off the lights went off again. I have tried to find a fuse that might be responsible for this but so far I can not locate what it might be called on the wiring diagram. Any suggestions of what else might be the problem?

On the older Bird's, BB had their way of wiring the 7 pin different, a little in reverse. I do not know if this applies to your Bird.

There are drawings on the Old Ernie Site. I can not find them on this site.

On the reversed turn signal wiring obviously the two plugs are wired different. I would check by hooking the trailer up to another vehicle with the same plug arrangement to see which one is off. I use a 7 round to 4 flat adapter on my 1980 Bird and on my 2000 Silverado and it has always worked the same on both.
The lights not coming on with Headlight switch then working when brakes are applied sounds to me like the old Ground Gremlins are at work.

you can buy a 7 way connector tester, or use a test light to verify your 7-way is conventionally wired.

the tester may be found locally at trailer/truck supplies

My turn signals were reversed also. I had to use an extension to reach the BB plug to my trailer so I just swaped the right/left wires on the extension. It looked to be much easier than removing the BB plug and rewiring it.

On my '85, the trailer wires are split through little thingamajibs attached to the inside of the engine door. The wires going through them are close to the same color as those on my towdolly harness: running lights=brown, etc. I need to find a new thingamajig since one of mine is bad causing running lights to flicker.

BB did not wire the female plug thats on the coach to code, rewire that and you will be fine.
The code is available on-line somewhere..

We had a trailer light problem on our '99 40LX BB. I traced it to the 7 pin plug. It turned out in our case that the brass connectors on the back of the plug had carbon steel screws in them and the whole thing was badly corroded. I replaced the plug and re wired it to conventional wiring. Everything worked fine. The wiring for our '06 450LXI was ok so the same connecting cable worked fine on both BB.
