Broke down in Medicine Hat. Alberta Canada
When going down the highway I heard a loud squealing sound.
Then it went away a few seconds later only to appear within a minute.
I pulled over and popped the engine cover
The belt driving the air compressor and generator is not going around.
Got a tow (on a flatbed trailer) to a CAT authorized service facility in Medicine Hat (Summit Motors).
Of course it a national holiday three day weekend.
No one will be here until Tuesday.
Don’t yet know if I can get into the repair facilities schedule for Tuesday.
I opened the front and removed two the drive belts routing from the crankshaft to the compressor and generator.
The generator and compressor spin freely by hand. Not sure why the belt wasn’t going around.
Compressor sounds like pistons are moving.
The belts don’t appear to have jumped out of the pullies and everything looks okay.
Could the belts just be too loose?
Could it be because there was enough back pressure on the compressor to stall the belt?
Is there some sort of compression release on the air compressor which is supposed to allow the compressor to start (like on my home compressor)?
I know it’s a dumb question but could the compressor (or generator) have been seized and now is okay after it cooled down?
I don’t really know how air the pressure regulates.
The air pressure was “normal” on both dash gauges.
To complicate matters I’m on an expensive international “roaming” cellular data connection.
I will connect up and periodically check for responses to my questions.

The only saving grace is if you’re going to be broke down a Wanderlodge is probably one of the most comfortable ways to do it.

put the belts back on and run it,while sitting in the lot.
they could have been loose,were they loose?

Good idea, I will replace the belts and fire it up.
I'd just hate to get an hour down the road only to have it fail again.

Jay if there is an idler pulley on those belts it can seize up. A long time ago my FC did that and it took me and Jeff Miller a while to figure it out. Only when the idler pulley was hot would it seize up, when cool it would spin freely.

When you r eplace the belt make sure it is done correctly

McMuck (wog) member Kelly McLaughlin lives in Medicine Hat - he had an 82FC - he might be able to ger you on the road.

Sounds like he has a machine shop there - quick google search should bring up a number. Sorry I don’t know him but he seemed to be helpful and knows his way around your vintage FC!

I didn’t realize the compressor/generator belt was driven by a secondary pulley which has an idler/tensioning pulley in the loop.
Pulled the idler and it’s frozen solid.
Waiting for CatHouse to open up tomorrow to order the part.
The number on my idler pulley is 9N3343.
From forum searches it appears the “new and improved” replacement is 7N7216.

I called Kelly Mclaughlin and he was a tremendous help.
He came to where I’m stranded on the road (in front of the CatHouse) and took me to an automotive parts house I never would have found on my own.
He also loaned me a 1 1/2 inch socket to fit the crankshaft so I can roll on/off the belts.

This is great information to have considering I do not currently have a 1 1/2" socket in the bus!!

I have rolled belts on,and jumped them on with a bar etc.
but its hard on belts.

I have a spare used pulley, if you're stuck.
