Troubleshooting kohler 7.5C61 RV No Start Problem

1 Attachment(s)
I took delivery of my FC with a known generator starting issue. Prior to my purchase, the previous owner had accidentally snagged a battery cable when retracting the tray and yanked the solenoid post out. Upon solenoid replacement something was miss wired and the unit cranks but won't run.

Q: Can anyone tell me where the wire in the picture goes? Also, I checked the breakers on the top of the controller and they seem okay, so I'm assuming that my problem will be a toasted relay. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Matt

I have some schematics but I don't know how to read them. Oil and coolant levels are okay as are the two breakers on the control box at the end of the gen head.

Q: where is the relay located inside the box? I assume that's it in the lower right corner.

Thanks,
Matt

From looking at the wire connections, the part in the lower right corner is the voltage regulator. I am not familiar with your model generator, but the engine controls on a BB coach are usually in a separate box. What engine does your gennie have? (is it gas, propane,or diesel fueled)

The engine is a gas Kohler 7.5C61-RV. There is a set of start/stop controls in the gen tray next to the engine(see first picture) and several remote switches inside the bus. I also think I found another generator relay next to the steps inside the power selector compartment.

The loose wire in the picture is my first concern. After that, finding where the relays are and checking them seems the logical path.

Thanks,
Matt

Most of us here have no idea what that engine number means.
We need to know:
Gas?
Diesel?
LPG?
i see a disrtributer but only see 2 plug wires.
Is it a 4 banger or 2?

It is a gas 4 banger. Sorry, I didn't realize that there were that many variations of a Kohler 7.5 genset on an '81-82 FC.

You need to check for fuel and spark first. May be an electric fuel pump? How old is the gas in the tank? Fuel filter could be clogged as well. I would expect to find at least one relay in the box with the start and stop buttons.

According to the Seller, the unit was purring like a kitten prior to solenoid replacement and the gas shouldn't be more than 1 year old. I found 3 relays inside the start/stop box as well as a disconnected original start/stop toggle, hence the push button start stop buttons that were added at some point. If I touch the red mystery cable to the solenoid post the engine continually cranks and attempts to start. The plastic housing on one of the relays(3CR) is cracked from jamming everything back into the box at some point.

Q: Does anyone know a great generator repair shop in the Phoenix area? I think the unit will run with the right troubleshooter. Also, are these relay parts still available?

Thanks,
Matt
