Here are a few pictures of Wanderlodge #1 - built in 1963.

This coach used to be on display at the factory in Fort Valley Georgia.

Morefire 09-17-2011 10:35 PM

wow, that would have been real nice coach in 1963, heck it's a nice coach now!

Kurt Ickler 09-17-2011 10:35 PM

That's the big question. John Bleakley RV owned it and they recently went out of business. Perhaps Ron ((Ron are you still on the group?) can enlighten us?

Did anyone find out what happened to #1

GreenBird 01-25-2012 08:17 PM

I thought there was another thread just recently about it being in the Henry Ford Museum (?)

RGloverii 01-25-2012 08:25 PM

If it's there, I didn't see it displayed. I was there over the summer, and it was nowhere to be found...

Blue Bird #1 is in the Ford Museum, BB1 was the very first school bus made by the Luce family. I don't think Wanderlodge 1 is there.

Jeff Huffman 01-25-2012 11:06 PM

I'm 4 miles from Henry Ford .... don't make me have to go there...... I'm layed off and can't afford the daily entrance fee.But I have been trying to get info. Give me some time and I will try to get info... THANKS.... Jeff

I believe he is referring to Wanderlodge #1 as shown in the photo's in this thread. Previously owned by John Bleakley, it hasn't been seen (to my knowledge) since Mr. Bleakley closed his dealerships.

Hi Jason,

I believe you’re right about the air conditioners.

Pictures of other very early wanderlodges show roof vents where those air conditioners are. I think Wanderlodge #1 would have originally had an air conditioner mounted in the rear cap above the rear window and one mounted in the wall just to the right of the entrance door.

I’m also pretty sure that the roof-top condenser shown on Wanderlodge #1 is not original equipment either – I think those came along a few years later.

The TV antenna doesn’t look original either. I think the very early Wanderlodge TV antennas looked more like they belonged on a house – sort of a big double flying “V”.

Updates to Wanderlodge #1

It is interesting that they would have updated it. I'm sure you guys have discussed this before, but was Wanderlodge #1 kept as a show piece from the start or was it later found and restored? I'm interested as to why they would have felt a need to update it. It would be interesting to hear stories from some of the Blue Bird guys as to their experiences with Wanderlodge #1- finding it, restoring it, doing the updates, driving it, etc.

Ernest Ekberg 01-27-2012 10:53 AM

When I was at Ed Wimberlys' in Nov, Tommy Roundtree, Ed and I went to the BB factory. Come to find out, Ed worked for BB for a few years and told us many stories about same. Ed- tell us about #1

Randy Dupree 01-27-2012 11:00 AM

From what i hear from friends that worked at BB the coach was restored in looks only.
They did a quicky restoring on it for a showing at the RIV,new faucets ac units etc.
According to my buddy the faucets are not even hooked up,they are there for display purposes only.
The AC units may be old non working units off of customer coachs,we are not sure.
It does run and drive, but leaks oil and coolant badly, its a 348 chevy engine, gas job.
Of course this is all hearsay, but it did come from an X employee of BB.

Ernie
Thanks but I'm not that old-yet.Whats Her Name and I worked there from
1975--1980 No info on Wanderlodge #1 other than it was stored in same out building with Blue bird #1 the school bus. Blue Bird #1 the school bus was rebuilt by the sons George Buddy and Joe Luce for their Dad Albert the orgional founder of Blue Bird. The BB#1 was reported as being only a cab and frame left, the body was remade as per orgional.
I have a copy of "The History of Blue Bird" when I can locate it I'll double check dates.

Here are some photos of my 1964 (April) BB Wanderlodge. I acquired it in Dec 2017 and have been making major repairs and mods to it. Still a lot to be done, but will be making a maiden voyage next week.

Just appeared on Facebook, looks like its been forgotten:(

Crit Bliss 08-10-2018 12:33 AM

thats sad

Randy Dupree 08-10-2018 12:47 AM

i tried to buy it back in 2008,they wanted $100,000.
i offered $5000,which was $4000 too much.
It was mostly all there, but had not run in years,348 chevy.
They used to drive it to the RIV at Perry, from the factory, but the fairgrounds told them they could not drive it on fairgrounds property, because it leaked oil so bad.
so they trucked it over.
but,its still part of history, which we (wog) are the only ones that care these days.

Gatorgrl 08-10-2018 08:45 AM

This breaks my heart. :(

Randy Dupree 08-10-2018 10:12 AM

I thought someone said it made its way to Mich and into a museum.
From what i hear, most water lines are not connected to anything under the sinks and stuff like that.

1964 Wanderlodge 31

Randy, I got those awnings from Walmart.com for $35 each. When I go out on the road, I lash them down Navy style.. they sure help with sun and rain and add privacy yet allow air movement through the windows.

Such a shame. I think it should go to the RV museum in Indiana.

Wanderlodge #1

We move down to Albany Georgia in 2000 and My wife and I visited the factory in 2001-2002 we were so impressed with the way they made these beautiful works of art.
At that time I remember seeing Wanderlodge #1 it was beautiful and sparkled like a jewel.
So sad to see it now.
It belongs in a museum protected for future generations.

Thanks for all the history....... Mario

2cruzers.
