Calling Toyota Gearheads

1 Attachment(s)
As luck would have it our beloved 4Runner now has a broken rear end. :(

Attachment 62789

It's an 8" V6 4:10 gear with speed / ABS sensor on top off a California Runner.
Toyota number G294

I have searched the local junk yards, craigslist and called every known import dealer in a trip county area and no one has what we need. We found one in Wisconsin off eBay, just I always have my doubts with eBay. Anyone know of a place that might have what we need or possible an overhaul kit with 4 bearings & shims, ring & pinion set?

4-Runner forums

Your 4Runner, like my erstwhile Landcruiser, has about a bazillion enthusiasts on yahoo groups and various independent forums. They're going to have info and probably a lot of expertise. They can be hairy to navigate and find what you want, but give it a shot.

Here's one: https://www.toyota-4runner.org

For more, search "4 runner diff 3rd axle repair replace rebuild used buy sell interchange".
Some people seem happ about buying an entire used read axle with 100k miles or more, if/when they find one.

Hope this helps.

Try Online parts like Rockauto

There's hope:

https://www.autozone.com/drivetrain/...a/4runner/1991

Gotchas: Some 2nd Generation V6 4-Runners w/G294 axle shipped with the 2-pinion 3rd member designed for the 4-cyl 4-Runner. Yours is supposed to be 4-pinion, stronger case too. Mebbe worth looking at:

Thanks, see I knew you guys were amazing. And I am, of course, a member of the 4Runners.com forum and have an entire re-build thread on there. You guys are just so darned dependable and amazing, I figured I'd ask here too.
I know it's not Bluebird related, but it is the toad to our Bluebird so....

Guess I'm shopping for a rear today. Gee retirement is fun. lol

Suggest car-parts.com

I have had very good luck with car-parts.com
Searches all the auto wrecking yards, find what I am looking for, next call or email the yard.

Toyota axles are going to be rare! Every Samurai and lots of buggies use them

Gatorgrl 07-03-2019 04:16 PM

I am convinced this rear end is made from hens teeth. Even called Toyota and they can't get one anymore. It's looking like we will have to buy the ring and pinion and then the rebuild kit and put it all together. It's the gear ratio of 4:10 and the fact it needs the speed/abs sensor on the top and it's for the 91 V6 4x4...freakin hens teeth! Don't get me wrong, I love a good challenge, but this is crazy. Thanks again for all of your help. I am still searching and making a list.

patticake 07-03-2019 06:52 PM

Gee, you sure picky, I have a 4cyl. Toyota pickup w/o an engine, but with the running gear, that I will let go cheap

Somewhere, there's a warehouse, the size of Rhode Island, where they horde all the hen's teeth and 4Runner rear axles. With the market cornered, they can sell only new unimaginablably expensive Shelby Fiat crossovers or something. Or name their price for 8" 4.10 ring and pinion.

The 4R got a big chunk of the existing market for Broncos/Rams/Blazers, Land Cruisers/Land Rovers, HiLux/Ranger/mini-pickups... What were production numbers for '91, I wonder. And where is that warehouse?

Thanks Steve, but that won't work in our application. :( We are still hunting and will find what we are looking for then it will just be a matter of how much do they want for their set of hens teeth set in unobtanium.

Assuming you already tried Randys and National?

nbedinger 07-04-2019 01:40 AM

:confused::eek::cool:Hey Dana Tony--

Ring gear looks hammered! W-A-Y abused!! If it wasn't about the shim pack I'd say a master kit is in order. Shim shim sheroot, I'm not clear if you get shims with any off the rebuild kits? I mean IF the used ones in your abused 3rd member aren't right for the rebuild, do you have a source? More to the point, what is the project you have in mind, just the ring'n'pinion or a rebuild? I gather cost is an issue, clue us on budget. Don;t say "As cheep as possible", say "$400" or "$1500", so we know how much you need to make this make this runner go.

Note, if that's covered in your rebuild thread, n'mind. I'll read about it.

Also noted: RETIREMENT IS FUN. Kiss the old drag g'bye, learn how to hear your own self think again, it is worth the pain :eek::cool:

I wish KC was here to spell it out in emogees, I miss the master, RIP.

badandy 07-04-2019 07:36 AM

Where in WI? You want me to take a look at it?

Gatorgrl 07-04-2019 02:07 PM

Thanks Ned, we are looking for all the pieces to this puzzle. It will likely come from various sources. He wants a master rebuild kit, that does come with shims and either a crush collar or a solid spacer, then we also need to find a set of 4:10 gears to go in the back. It will happen just not fast enough to make him happy. I am just super nervous about spending $$ now that I am no longer working. First time in my working life I have ever been unemployed/retired.

Remember we still need to put new tires on it and haven't even looked at PMing the bus for this big adventure.

Gatorgrl 07-04-2019 05:49 PM

Thanks Randy, I was able to find new Yukon ring and Pinion off Amazon as well as a Yukon master rebuild kit. If we got them locally, they would have to special order them and it would cost more. I have Prime so I can get them here sooner and cheaper for the same brand.

rshrimp 07-05-2019 09:43 AM

I know you know but, Make sure you flush out that housing real good! Lots of metal in there. I would change axle bearings/seals as well.

Gatorgrl 07-05-2019 04:39 PM

Oh you know it Randy. The parts should all be here middle of next week. if tony hasn't retuned from NY by then, I'll just take it to the machine shop and have them rebuild it for me.He took the only car with a fully functioning a/c to NY this afternoon. The Runners a/c works great but is waiting for its rear end. Camaro's great but no a/c, CSI, no a/c and no starter. Other Camaro is...well...a long way off. Guess I'll be spending a lot of time at home. :(

Happy BadAndy?

badandy 09-13-2019 11:58 PM

**** skippy! I have a TVS2300 that would look good sticking out the hood on top of that, too!

Gatorgrl 09-14-2019 07:03 AM

:p I'm just playing with your emotions badAndy. :D

It's actually a remand LS we picked up for a customer pay job we are doing this weekend. It's going in his daily commuter truck.

We finally got the kinks ironed out of the 4Runner and she purrs like a kitten, sure she's still a bit slow, but how fast would you really want to go in one of those things all up in the air like that anyway?

I ain't never had too much fun, isn't that how the song goes?

Gatorgrl 09-24-2019 09:11 AM

Today we are working on the wiring for the Runner toad. He is going to be using a 7pin to 4pin connector at the bus and just run 4pin wires to the toad. Lets all hope the turn signals come out correctly.

Gatorgrl 10-11-2019 09:44 AM

I won a street race!!!!!!!:D

It was early,
we lined up at the light, revving our engines...
The light turns green and away we go!
It was neck in neck at the start, I was worried, but managed to pull ahead and win.

Ok, so the other guy was a big yellow school bus
and sure he might not have known we were racing :o

But a WIN is a WIN! :p

Bill Pape 10-11-2019 09:59 AM

A Win Win,
Now we are curious, what will show up at the rally, Muscle car, 4-runner, Bird, or Mini.
Dana, Tony, Daughter , pets, cats ect??

Gatorgrl 10-11-2019 10:02 AM

Well, the Mini is gone, traded it for the 4Runner. We don't have the tow hooks on the Camaro yet and the wiring harness isn't installed for the tow light so it probably won't be the Camaro.

If you knew how incredibly slow our 3.0L is, you'd appreciate the joke far more.lol
