Speedometer Works when its Wet (ish)

So my speedometer stopped working last year, it was never really accurate anyway, and I use the GPS for speed. Shortly after I bought our bus it started surging while driving, going to 0 then back up to 65, or somewhere in between. Then like I said it stopped working all together last year.

Well Yesterday we started a 3 day trip from Norman OK to Pine Mountain for the Rally and it was raining with no end. Well it did end just 5 hours later when we got to Texarkana.

But I noticed right away that the speedometer was surging again and did it all day. Then this morning it was still a bit rainy and it was semi working again, then it dried up and the speedometer stopped working again.

Anyone have any idea what might be happening?

While this may not apply to your vintage, my 97 would do that when the speed sensor went out. It would work, then not work for awhile and then do sporadic bouncing around seemingly at will. I replaced the sensor and all has been fine since. You may just have a loose connection allowing water to get on the leads. On the 4060 the sensor was street side and easy to get to.

Thanks Dave, I'll see if I can track down were it is on mine.

Sorry for your loss of your pup and bird.

Mine had the same problem so I went with Speedhut. Their unit is GPS. Had it now for over 2 years now and no problems. Only time it would stop showing is when passing thru a tunnel.
Easy install or I couldn't do it myself!:p
