+1 on Andy’s suggestion.
Woodworking parallel bar clamps work very well. If you wanted to modify, burrow a semipherical divot in each end to index the gas strut. Or a smaller hole than the diameter of the clamp.
Good ones (like Bessey) are about $40 ea. A used one would be less.

They are more or less commercial grade version of what Van photo’d. Cool design but time and materials and I think you are money behind.
