Detroits are supposed to use a dedicated heavy Diesel coolant such as Final Charge. Automotive coolant types are not suitable.

The cylinder liners vibrate during operation and are subject to the coolant boiling next to the liner during a part of the vibration cycle (cavitation). When the bubbles collapse the momentary overpressure erodes the metal of the liner. Eventually this process will eat a hole in the liner, requiring that the liners be replaced (in-frame rebuild).

It happens that Final Charge is orange, similar in color to Dex-Cool, but other suitable types have different colors.
