Camp Host Position Near Tampa Available Now!
I'm told that Camp Host positions in the Florida State Park Campgrounds are normally taken months or even years in advance, but I lucked into one at Litle Manatee River State Park a month ago and I really really enjoy the park, the personnel, and the part time duties.
We're a small 40 site campground with thirty 50 amp campsites around a central bathhouse, plus five 30 amp Equestrian sites and 5 tent sites nearby. Many mornings (like today) I'll see a family of five deer, including 2 not much bigger than a large dog. Plus rabbits, tortoises, and other animals in our protected woods. Lots of interesting people and RV's--from big buck Class A's to people in tents and their homemade van conversions. Right now I am the only host but we have an open campsite for a second host and my spot will open up around March 1st. Here are some particulars: 1) "Volunteer" Hosts are required to work 24 hours a week. Normally this is 4 days on and 4 days off which gives the hosts time to travel or entertain family and friends, but the schedule is very flexible and can be changed to accommodate doctor's appointments, out of town trips, etc. 2) Hosts receive a free campsite for up to four months, which is worth $1,000+ monthly during snowbird season-IF you can find a site. 3) RV age or appearance is not an issue--any Wanderlodge will be looked at with envy by most of your neighbors (speaking of which, if you don't like your neighbors rest assured they'll be gone in a week or so ). 4) Contrary to my previous assumptions, although many Hosts are couples, single people are accepted as long as they work the weekly 24 hour part time requirement. 5) Although some SP campgrounds have sewer hookups for Host sites, most, like mine, have a dump station so you can either dump once a week (or two, in my case) or use a portable dump tank. Starting my bird once every week or two is probably a good idea anyway. 6) Although cleaning the restrooms is part of the job, this is a small part of the day and more pleasant than the years I helped take care of my parents. On slow mid-week or off season days it usually only takes an hour or two at most. 7) There are other benefits too, such as free washer/dryers for volunteers' use, hiking trails, canoe waterways to explore, etc. If you're interested, either for an immediate position or one later in the year, PM (Private Message) me on this site, include your phone number and I will call you with more details. I'd love to have a fellow Wanderlodge here. Sun City Center is just 10 minutes away with restaurants, Publix, Walmart, Winn Dixie, etc. Hope to hear from you!
