1986 - '88 | PT38 questions
Are the 1986 - '88 model PT38s the only years that the PT38 was available with an 8V92 engine before the WB era? I am getting my info from the 'Highlights of Blue Bird Wanderlodge Model Changes'.
If this is true, those particular years of the PT38 (with the 8V92) would have to be my choice. To me they look compact but with the power of a locomotive. I am just starting to look, so this may not be the right coach for the two of us. If anyone out there has real knowledge of that make/model/year I would be very interested to hear their opinions. Thanks!

As current owners of an '86 PT38 we are a little partial. We love it. Also note that the '86 has a mechanical 8V92 meaning no DDEC system, and has the electronic push-button Allison tranny. Get it fuel and air and it will run. Not sure whether the 87-88 models are DDEC or not. As for power, it sure beats the FC35 we owned back when. But the FC was still a great coach and we loved it, too. PT will get you there faster and easier to have a conversation going down the road. FC got better mileage. Every model has its pros and cons. Just depends on what your needs and wants are, and your budget. The old saying rings true: Buy the best one you can afford. Good luck in your search.

The 87 and 88 PT are mechanical. I think the 86 still has the old style dash.

We have an 87 pt 40 8v-92 mechanical, I think the DDEC started in late 88 modules WB.
These buses are heavy so you need some power to pull the big hills our slows a bit down shifts and pulls. I don’t have anything to compare it to though. Our first bus only had it on 3 trip. Drives very nice. Having fun! Good luck hope you find one.
