I had no idea how easy it was to change a tire with the wheel still on; cool video, Randy!

For almost 3 years I carried a mounted spare on my PT-40, in the pass-thru basement (could never figure how to get it on the roof, steel wheel was really heavy!) I figured if I ever had a flat tire I could use the leveling jack to lift the bus up, & replace it myself...then one day realized I didn't have a lug wrench big enough! Was just getting ready to try & sell it, but on getting bus tires replaced, tech found big crack on inside dually wheel, so glad I kept it! But, on reflection, tires are far more likely to fail than wheels; now I know tires can be replaced in situ, gonna follow everyone's advice & get a spare one to carry on the roof, can't sacrifice any basement space!

I know for certain my 22.5 315 Michelins will fit perfectly in the back of a 2013 Honda CRV. Relatively easy to get in and out (if unmounted) then store under your bus if you need the room.

Mine is going up before I go to shipsaswaina rally. Around here not to bad I can drive home and get it. Iam just at the lake. 2 hours away

This is the goat rail mounted hoist we had on the FC we used to have. It was mounted to the back corner of the goat rail and when stood up it could swing over the side. 12V winch made it easy to get mounted spare on and off the roof. The one time I had to use it, the stud holes on an outer dual had been buggered and I was really thankful to have a wheel with me. The only reason I don't have a similar setup on my PT38 is that the Hemmings Motor News guys had the goat rails removed back in the day, so there is nothing strong enough to mount a similar hoist to.

This conversation usually comes up about once a year and this was the solution for my carrying a spare.

It is made of a long piece of thin aluminum two 6" hose clamps cut in half and riveted on. I used some gal. steel pieces for the bottom and the top. The bottom is attached to the decking. Then a hole was drilled in the bottom piece to allow a bolt to come up from the bottom. A turnbuckle was then attached to that and the eye bolt that went through the top piece. You just tighten down the eye bolt as needed by hand. Wrap the whole thing in black plastic or something to keep the sunlight off of it and you have a spare, on the roof, and looks good from the ground. It just looks like a shinny aluminum container from the ground.

Default carrying a spare

For all of the 18 year I've owned my coach. I have always carried a mounted spare in my front pass thru compartment. Along with my slide out tool box and 4 of KC's yellow boxes filled with extra parts. I know FC's don't have this option, but most PT's should be able to carry one.

I've only had to use the spare once in all these years, but I'm glad I had it.
