Ned, I think I have a 50 AMP breaker box in the 1st storage compartment on the street side of the coach. Do you?

Hmmph, I don't think I do. Is it round? I have a 400A breaker 'cos the first street side is my batt compartment. Lots of studs, shunts, automotive breakers, solenoids etc around there, maybe there is a 50A breaker, also. I'll look for it next sunny day.

Need it is the 1st storage box. That will be behind the steer axle. Regular 110 volts breaker box mounted to the forward wall. Take a look.

Ned , Rick,

It is a standard 120/240 circuit breaker box looks like the picture in post #12.
I installed a 40 amp years ago, easily available, 35 amp is not a stock item but available.
$10.00 at Homey/Lowes install a double 30 amp for now. after this repair job for me, I may move to a 30 amp. The 8 K Onan is a great genie, and it is adequate for a two air conditioner Bird, But I will really be cautious in the future when using AC's because of the current draw when the compressor cycles.

Indeed, it is there, high on the compartment's front wall. My sliding tool chest dominates that space and my attention when I'm in there

Can't read the faded dual-breaker switch labels, need to see what brand the box is and put a new slow-blow dual 30A in there.

Good old Wanderlodge, Blue Bird thought of everything. Thanks for the guidance, Rick and Bill.

Default Brushless Generator Repair (Onan)

Our brushless Onan 8K generator stopped producing AC power. The symptoms were one leg was producing about 90 volts, the surge protector did not like this reading and shut down all power.
In restarting the generator without a load the 208 volt cooling fan began to run for about 15 seconds then stopped. There was 10 volts AC measured on each leg with a meter at the generator circuit breakers.

We found little information available on this forum or other generator forums for our model Onan 8K brushless generator. So with the help of an Onan service manual & talking several times to John Wyatt, and an Onan technician, I decided that there was little that could be accomplished without removing the gennie from the Bird. There are several troubling shooting tips in the service manual, but without the proper test equipment, we had no success. There were misleading readings from an Ohm meter while testing windings and internal diodes, without disconnecting the internal parts.
Upon disassemble there was one shorted diode on the main pack of six diodes and a shorted diode on the bridge rectifier. The bridge rectifier is a DC rectifier used to regulate the AC voltage as the load changes.

A few assumptions & guesses about the cause are: It was time for a diode to brake down & short out, or the power demand was greater than the generator could handle. Parked too close to Finn
Bluebird had installed a double 50 amp breaker in the power lines, that exit the generator & before the main AC load center. BlueBird also wired the 208 Volt cooling fan motor before this breaker directly to the generator output windings, without circuit breaker protection.
For this 8K Onan the manual recommends circuit breaker protection for the fan motor & a 35 amp main circuit breaker. The current draw for the cooling fan motor needs to be included in the power generation delivery and it will "NOT" register on the generator current gages.
I think the Surge protector worked as designed, saving us from other issues and it is possible that the generator was being overloaded. We installed a 35 amp breaker and in the future the loads will be monitored more closely.

Onan Service Manual & pictures, the bridge rectifier is to the far right of the control box in picture #4.

Default Bearing replaced

The main rear bearing was still smooth but a bit dry, it would last longer ,
but it was an easy replacement and a common bearing.
Below is a picture of the readily available circuit breakers that need to be replaced on the 8k Onan.

Default Alternator Bearings,

Our Onan has an alternator, its' most important job is that of a water pump pulley,
so the three bearings were replaced, using a bottle jack as a press.

Also pictures is a one inch piece of pipe machined to a flat surface to install the main bearing on the generator shaft,
with soft taps, tap, tap tap.

Default Insulation & ready to install

Seven years ago we replaced the insulation , replaced the cooling fans & replaced the radiator core.
Stephen's Dupree Products Insulation is still in good condition & sticking to the walls of the Bay.
