Default Goat Rail needed

Hello all
The previous owner removed the goat rail from the coach we purchased,
claimed better fuel milage I do not believe any such claim.
I am looking for a replacement goat rail maybe off a severely wreck or scrapped unit. I think most 35 footers FC or PT may fit or be less of a hassle to make work, short of building complete rail. With that said maybe I would be better off to build one out of stainless.
What do ya'll think?

While at Maxton, I was up on Tom S's PT 38 and commented to him that the goat rails appeared to be made of aluminum... at least the horizontal members appeared to be. I wasn't paying real close attention to this and it could be the verticals coming off the roof were steel... at least in the area where he has a crane. Is this true of other late 80's models?

I know the entire goat rail unit on our FC is steel.

Bill

Bill,

My entire goat rail is constructed from aluminum tubing and it is round instead of square, it is the only one like this that I know of.

If anybody is interested in purchasing the flip-up rails, they are available for sale, but have to be removed from the roof, they just has surface rust and could easily be sandblasted and either painted or powder-coated.

John, what are the flip-up rails? Are these some kind of fence for the observation deck? How many are there?

I am thinking about getting or fabricating a crane that would lift a spare tire for example among other things. Wondering if anybody has done this and might have plans for one?

Just did a quick search and came on this aluminium job. It's nice, but seems pricey! Any other ideas out there?

Bill,

When Budweiser owned my 'Bird they used the roof for a platform to address crowds, etc at events, there was even a microphone jack on the roof, so they had a total of 6 of these flip up post, with two heavy plastic coated cables strung between them that encircle the sides and front of the roof, for safety precautions. I won't be using them as I have added additional items to the roof that make it impractical for use, such as viewing races, etc. there isn't any place to set a chair up there anymore.

Bill, the 84PT40 i had had the aluim goat fence on the roof,i have seen other coachs with steel rails.
I have seen later coachs up into the late 80's with steel rails, and some had aluim rails.
I never could figure out why some had steel, and some had aluim.

I built a crane with winch one time,it worked well until one time the hook came off the tire and wheel when it was almost as high as the roof, when that tire hit the ground it bounced up 8' and broke the back window out of the 84pt.
it could have killed the helper i had at the time.
Bruce Campbell now has that crane.
