I used a slightly different process on that repair. I scuffed the whole panel to 800 grit. Then sanded the damaged areas with 120 grit. Then bondo puttied over. Then sanded flat. Then primered just the local area, then wet sand flat. The local area was probably 2 x 4" x 4" spots, one above the flutes one below.
Then I sanded those to 800 grit. Then applied base coat with a $50 air brush I bought on Amazon. I painted the air brush beyond the primered areas to blend. That was maybe 4 or 5 coats with light coats beyond the repair.

I then cleared the whole panel in about 3 coats.

Total repair time 2 or 3 hours over 2 days.
Lots of steps, but each are short. And lots of waiting for bondo to harden. Each coat of paint to dry, etc.
