Default Heading west

My wife and I are planning a two month trip out west. Heading out along the northern states and than dropping down and returning thru the southern states. We are planning to miss the Pacific coastal states. What I'm looking for is some suggestions as to where to stop and visit other than the big obvious ones, ie Yellow Stone, Grand Canyon etc. Also good places to eat, stay, etc. Any and all input is welcome.

We do a lot of our planning with Atlas Obscura and Roadside America.

When we went to the Grand Canyon, we stayed at the KOA in Williams. There are nice restaurants and shops in town as well as the Railroad that takes you right into the Grand Canyon. There is an RV park near the town of Williams as well. Nothing fancy, but cheaper than the KOA.

We have stayed at Black Bart’s RV Park in Flagstaff. They have a steakhouse there that is quite nice that features live, saloon-style entertainment. You also get a discount at the steakhouse if you stay in the park. The Sams Club nearby also has good price on diesel.

Assuming you have not done this already, if you stay in Flagstaff, a day trip into Sedona is another great experience with lots of opportunity for photography. Good trails for hiking, mountain biking, as well as restaurants and shops. We enjoy driving our toad through the 89A which takes you through slide rock state park.

Horseshoe bend is also about 2 hours north of Flagstaff.

  1. Get the All-Stays app! It’s like $10 but worth every penny
  2. Realize that you said other than the big places... However, if you plan on visiting them & staying inside the parks, get reservations! Yellowstone takes them 12 mo in advance, while the others open their res at six months. To get the most coveted sites or stay up to 14 days (like we did directly overlooking Lake Yellowstone two years ago), recommend you be on the phone/online with the reservation agent exactly (i.e. to the day) 12/6 months before you plan to arrive. Nail down reservations at the most desirable places with time in between and then fill those openings later. They become our base and we typically toad it in all directions. Unlike most, we avoid commercial “reachout-and-touch your neighbor” FHU “resorts” whenever possible and instead prefer NFS, public & boondocking places. However, the All-Stays app can show them all. Btw, our coach hasn’t seen hookups since Memorial Day and won’t be plugged in again till after Labor Day
  3. If you’re eligible and have not yet gotten your Senior “Geezer” Pass, do so. Even at its recently increased price, it’s the deal of a lifetime
  4. Take a look at Nina & Paul’s 8 years of ‘Traveling the US’ page, much of it was done in the west. Nina’s park reviews & recommendations are fabulous! Under the theory of not duplicating effort, when planning next years travels I START my planning using Nina’s guidance. I’ve followed them for years and was saddened when they moved to Europe. However, I’d recommend you review this info and from that, work up your own route & combination places to visit in the west: https://wheelingit.us/the-journey/

Go see the big Sequoia redwoods. Pop up to Lake Tahoe.
