Default Kubota power tech 15 KW Generator Fan not working

91 WB, 62k miles, generator hours unknown.

Ran the generator this weekend for an hour or so and noticed it spewing antifreeze from the overflow hose, steam coming from the front. Once cool I checked the antifreeze level, and ended up adding nearly a gallon! Upon further investigation, I noticed the squirrel- cage fan not running on it's own. Pretty sure this is the source of the overheat issue! When I hand spun it, it seemed to run at a slow speed. I shut off and restarted, and again it did not run on its own.

Before I dig into this I thought I'd check to see if there a common source for this issue? I searched the WOG last night and was not able to find an obvious thread.

Any help is appreciated!

Gerry

There's threads on converting the squirrel fan to an automotive 12v. When the genny was running was it powering the coach?

I would look at replacing the start capacitor. That is an easy fix.
If your capacitor is good and your electric motor is running slow, you may need to replace the motor.

Check the breakers on the generator. It may be one of them tripped and its just not getting power. Mine was doing that and I found out the breakers were weak and it was causing them to trip. Next step would be to check the capacitors.

It was indeed the start capacitor. Failed on the multi-meter for capacitance, and was able to test with an old one from a friend. It fired right up with his. New one on order from Amazon will be here tomorrow.

Thanks for the WOG help!

I found out with mine that it is named a "Squirel Cage Fan " for a reason. I got to "Q" 2 years ago and my Genny fan sounded horrible! It turned out I had brought Oregon Squirrels south to Arizona and they scattered after the initial startup. Lots of cleaning out the nests got me running until I got home and pulled the radiator and cleaned it well.
If they have taken to the heat, " I know NOTHING!"

Gerry , You should catch Johns entire show , he also runs a casino I'm told but that might just be open next Q . Watch the Q thread for show dates and times . As I remember tickets sell pretty quick . You don't want to miss the Grammy winning Wanderlodge Blue Bird Song, It alone is worth the price of admission
