Default Wiring for remote GenSet Autostart

I'm (trying) to wire up a XanTrex GenSet auto-start system to my '87 PT40 which has a Kohler branded, Yanmar 12.5k generator.

I need to connect a "start", a "run signal" and ground wire, but am unsure what the color coding for these is ... it makes sense to me to connect into the wiring at the remote stop/start switch above the drivers console, but naturally the color coding there does not match the owners manual for the generator, and its not clear in the blue box diagrams.

My Xantrex AGS manual infers that the Kohler is a "2 wire" system, ie : That a relay in the AGS unit senses a momentary voltage from the remote switch and then a relay either starts or stops the Genset.

This seems odd to me in that the remote switch has a triple pole double-throw switch ....

I "assume" that :

Purple - 12v constant in from Gen battery
Green - Glow plug manual (hold to use) supply
Black - Gen start circuit.
Blue - ?
Yellow - ?

The above is a pure crapshoot.

Anyone got a better clue about the color codes or have already done this and can give me direction ?

I'll be following this thread. I have all the parts...just need to do the upgrade.

I see your delema...
If it where me firstly wait and see if anyone comes up with some schematics for you..barring that

http://www.donrowe.com/user_guides/x..._gen_start.pdf

Mark well the wires and locations on your switch..
The wires you want to hit will be in the gen set...
Then take a picture of same close up front and back.
Then I would sit down with my switch and a continuity meter and figure out what it is.
Then reinstall as before and check each terminal for power and function.
Mine is a momentary push on and momentary off.
There should be a start system in the generator cabinet as well.
Wish I could help more.
Can you post the instructions and the xantrex schematics for wiring?
Which specific xantrex unit do you have?
Perhaps a picture of the switch would also give us more to go on as well.

I installed a Magnum AGS for my Yanmar/Kohler. I had to add a relay between the AGS and the start switch over the drivers head. I can't get to my wiring diagram until Wednesday. If you have not figured it out by then, i will fill you in on what I had to do to get it working.

I've been pleased with the results. It now auto starts on low voltage or high interior temps. It will pull in the glow plugs on the start cycle for 10 seconds prior to engaging the starter.

Regards,

Glenn

Glen, Looking forward to hearing more about your installation of Magnum AGS. I am considering installing same unit on my coach. Wiring diagram, pictures? Thanks!

I took some readings off the remote gen start switch today. I have a Kohler 12.5k gen with a 4TN82E engine mfd by Yanmar.

The lighted "Carling" brand rocker switch (no part number on it) in my '86 has 8 poles, one unused.

YLW PUR OPEN

BLU PUR

BLK PUR GRN

Here is what I found:

Purple = Ground (supplies 3 terminals on the switch, one of which would be the neg for the light in the switch itself)

Green = 12v+ that is normally on, but drops when the gen is running

Yellow = 12v+ that is normally on, but drops only when the gen "stop" is momentarily depressed. It is on during run and when off

Blue = 12v+ that is present at momentary start and during run

Black = 12+ that is present only during run. Maybe the + pole for the light in the switch ?)

I'm not any closer to deciding what the proper "run", "start/stop" wires are (the latter throws me off a bit), but I think I have the switch wiring itself figured out.

My hunches at the moment are :

Start = Blue ?
Run = Black

I still dont see how the Xantrex unit would get a stop signal off this two wire configuarion that they state is the normal one for Kohler in their manual.

Anyone else had any experience with the Xantrex AGS interface ? I called there today and spent 15 minutes with music-on-hold before hanging up.

Called Xantrex today. If its not already in the manual for the AGS unit, they can't help.
The only thing pointed out is that the switching (dry relay contact) is on the negative side of the system. Other than that they have zero tech info on any particular installation color code assistance. Couldn't even really tell me what to be looking for ...

In your travels this site might help
http://www.donrowe.com/user_guides/xantrex/automatic_gen_start.pdf

I guess you know what is next...

Pick a set that you are sure connect when you push the start button
Pick set/pair to try.

take a set you know get connected and disconnect them from the switch then push the button... what doesn't happen?

for instance you might crank the motor on the gen but not start.....
The glow plugs turn on
finally you might find a run set that opens the fuel valve
Well as you go you might actually figure this out...

Take lots of pictures!!

you are the Guinea pig!

I made it to the coach tonight and took a photo of my install. I will try to get the photo and schematic uploaded thursday afternoon. I had to add a relay in the preheat circuit.

Data coming soon....sorry for the delay, just overloaded and too little time.

Marty,

Here is a picture of the Magnum AGS & added relay install. It is located in the forward most driver's side overhead compartment. The wires run around to the remote start switch over the drivers head.

The wiring schematic is below. The top row is the header connector on the geneartor for reference. However, I just had to wire to the remote switch which is already connected to the generator header.

I had to add the relay to the Magnum AGS due to the polarity of the voltages in the start/pre-heat/off remote switch and the output of the AGS.

Let me know if you need any additional information.

Regards,

Glenn
