Caterpillar 3208 Solutions This sub-forum is hosted by Mike Hohnstein who has been at this kind of thing for 50+ years now, guess I'm addicted. The saga has been all about progressively larger shop space since then. Honestly, never wanted to get into the CAT 3208's that were originally considered to be a throwaway engine but that's all that works in a FC in my world. Same thing with my Ford toter, that came with a NA, too much effort to hang in a 6, so been at it with the CAT V-8 for 20 years now. In reality you can get excellent life out of a CAT 3208 if it's built correctly. Post your questions about the CAT 3208 engines here and Mike will try to help you out.

Default Anyone Replaced Exhaust Manifold 3208NA?

I am trying to get a local diesel shop to replace my streetside exhaust manifold. Initially they told me they could do it in a couple hours, but have now changed their mind. They are telling me they may need to jack the engine up off the mounts to get enough room to get to the bolts. Does anyone have experience with changing the manifold while the engine is in the bus? I really would like to be informed before I tell them to proceed one way or the other.

The specifics are as follows:

-1980 FC35SB
-Cat 3208 NA
-Replacing Driver Side exhaust manifold

Any assistance is appreciated.

Default Exhaust manifold

Just removed and reinstalled the head on the drivers side on my FC35. The exhaust manifold has to be removed to get to the head bolts that are behind/underneath the manifold. The entire engine cover lower side of course has be removed. Getting the bolt locks undone is a bear but you can get to the upper manifold bolts from the top and the lower from underneath. It was not easy but doable and did not require lifting the engine. My engine is a 250 turbo but this I believe should be close to the same as the NA unless the exhaust pipe connection is just to big to slide out.

Thanks for the response - I did get the manifold replaced without the issues they thought we may have. It is tight in there, but as long as you can get the locks loose on the manifold bolts it goes pretty easy. Thanks again for your insight.
