Default Cummins 8.3 Fuel filter confusion

What I've read on here (and what's always been on my bus) is that the filter on the engine should be FS1251 and the large easy to get to filter should be FS1242.

I was looking on Cummins site and it seems that BOTH of these are 20 micron filters:
FS1251 - https://catalog.cumminsfiltration.co...&criteria=part

FS1242 - https://catalog.cumminsfiltration.co...art&_locale=en

I read on a diesel truck form that the FS1251 is 20 micron with a 10 micron 2nd pass. I can't see that anywhere on Cummins/Fleetguard site or in any other literature, just in a forum post.

I did find this filter FS1015 which is a 10 micron filter to replace the large easy to get to filter :https://catalog.cumminsfiltration.co...art&_locale=en

I'm wondering if it makes sense to just use this filter to do everything and leave the little one up there not getting clogged (and increasing change intervals since it is such a pain to get to).

Thoughts??

I went on cummins quickserve and as an FYI the FS1251 is spec'd as the primary filter. I'm still tossing the idea around of switching to the FS1015 as a secondary.

Here is info I received from Cummins:

"DuWayne,

FS1242 is 20@96% and 10@79%.
FS1251 is the same.

All of our filters have a primary and secondary rating. The primary is typically 98.7% or higher which is the 'absolute efficiency' which means its going to catch a particle this size all of the time. The secondary rating is anything less than 98.7%. These filters are essentially filtering the same particles. So the one that is closest to the engine is not doing anything to benefit you. I suggest switching that one down to a smaller micron."

So, I will try the FS1015 (10 micron 1st pass) as the secondary and let the primary sit there. FS1015 is even bigger than the FS1242 and if I change it once a year should be fine (basically the primary will do nothing just get changed out every 3 yrs for age reasons). I'll let y'all know if this has any bad side effects. I am going to ask them if there is a small micron option for the primary (none is listed but I'll ask).

Default Filter

I use the FS 1000 for my primary fuel filter. Someone at Cummins told me a long time ago that was the one to use.
