Be careful with the spring tightening, it is a bear and can break your arm if it gets away from you!!! Its best to do it with a friend helping... If memory serves me, (you know how that goes), Zip Dee says that you do one complete revolution + 2 turns per length of awning...

Default Patio awning spring failure

After installing my patio awning, I started to rewind the springs tension and after 15 turns on the 23 foot awning, the spring snapped with a lot of noise.

After removing the 49" spring assembly and fishing out the remaining parts with a broom handle with a cup hook on the end, I now know why I had issues with getting it to retract previously.

It appears the spring had been over wound previously and the spring was badly distorted and binding inside the metal tube due to twisting of the spring steel almost into a pretzel configuration.

New complete spring assembly with lock shipped was $217 from Zip Dee and will install as soon as it arrives.

Zip Dee replaced our patio awning 5 years when it was ruined in a wind storm. Every thread has rotted and all the panels have separated. Zip Dee wants nothing to do with it. They won't even re-sew it at our expense. So we bought new awning fabric, but can't find a dealer to install it. We have called several that are listed on their web site, but they don't seem to know anything about awnings. Anyone have experience with a Zip Dee dealer North or West of Lexington KY?

Thanks Randy, I hate to ask for that much help, but it may turn out to be my best option.

Wow John, that is disappointing that the material only lasted 5 years and then on top of it they don't want anything to do with it. Zip Dee seems to have lost some of their Zip. Maybe they should change their name to Zip Dud

That's right, 5 years ago the original awning was torn off in a wind storm, there were no rotten threads. It's still being used as an outside tarp and still has excellent threads. The new one began to rot at 4 years. We've taped and sewed several panels over the last year, but it's falling apart faster than we can keep up. The Sunbrella material is in fine shape. We didn't expect it to be repaired under warranty, but they wouldn't even repair it at our expense. They would only sell us a new awning but still wouldn't install it. We called several dealers, but most of them said they sent in the form to be a dealer but had never worked on a Zip Dee awning.

I'm down to help if we do it at Pine Mountain. It'll be the "semi impromptu zip-dee awning fabric install clinic." Sounds Fun!

We could probably come up with a name that isn't such a mouthful.
