Shane, a few years ago while heading to the Balloon Fest Tami and I took this back way to see the VLA and take the tour. I had heard about Pie Town but never thought of actually going out of my way to see it. Glad we stopped.. you won't be disappointed! Easy parking with plenty of room. If memory serves I saw two cafes there? You want the one on the South side.

The two cafes are now open on different days so they don't have to compete against each other.

Mike- how's Route 60 down into PHX? Looks like there are a few kinks in the road.

I saw that too and thought it would be a good place to stop by. I like US 60 I have done most of Kentucky on US 60 and would like to hit a few other states on US 60, not as popular or nostalgic as Route 66 but still has a lot to offer.

I love the 60 and typically take if over I40 any day. Much smaller, slower speed limits, smaller shoulders, but very scenic if you're not in too much of a hurry.

Once you hit Show Low then you have a decision to make. Take 60 to Miami/Globe and come down through the Salt River Canyon or take the 260 to Payson. In my opinion they both require a retarder. The Salt River Canyon is a very step drop/climb but gorgeous! As long as you have a retarder I'd say you have to do it once AND during the day time.

On the other hand, Going down through Payson is a much longer down hill drop coming off the Mogollon Rim but again, tall pines and beautiful views.. another day trip. You can also camp at Show Low or on the rim at Woods Canyon Lake. Both are great spots.

Attached is Fools Hollow Lake in Show Low.

UPDATE - Just checked and Woods Canyon doesn't handle 40' coaches. :-) But Fools Hollow does;

Ah Shane, you may want to check these websites as it appears both restaurants are closed during "Q" season.
