Default Cummins Crank Sensor

I have been told that this is a common failure on Cummins Engines and some recommend changing it every 5-7 years.

I have an ISM and I looked up the sensor on Quickserve and found a part # for MY engine.
3078150 is the sensor only
3046201 is the oring
3078151 is the kit (sensor and oring)
The above sensor # has been superseeded to:
4326596.

This sensor pretty much fits every Cummins that has one. It screws in and is located on the back of the front cover ( by "back" I mean toward the front of the bus) on the curb side near the power steering pump.
Retail from Cummins dealer is $45.98 and they will most likely have it in stock as it fits pretty much everything.
They can crack with time and cause intermittent no start issues.

OH! and Cummins only has one so I have to Assume it's on the Cam! If you know where the cam is, you should know where the crank is!

Randy. I have had some slow starts on my ISM and now I have a warning light on. Bus runs fine just came back from a 600 mile trip. Did you have a warning light on what brought you to replace this sensor?

Nope, just PM. I have been told that these should be replaced every 5-7 years. Mine is OEM as far as I can tell.

randy I had a problem with my m11 it had like a miss when first started and would cranks for a long time once and a while no all the time .... pulled engine position sensor and it had a crack across face replaced it and never had a issue again
I should ad that the sensor can be failing and not show a code same thing with boost sensor I replaced them both...

Like Mike said.
Had an intermittent no start issue and after replacing this sensor it went away.

Installed the new crank sensor today. the sensor looked like it was oem. Face was cracked across the face. Coach cranks faster then ever and idles much smother then ever. Warning lite is still on but that's another day. Thanks for the post.

Update after some research and interesting read:
The Cummins cam sensor has 4 wires and I just found out why! It actually is 2 sensors in one. There is a primary sensor and a backup sensor. The primary does all the work unless it fails. If it fails the backup takes over and sets a fault code in the ECM. Pretty cool!
