Default First year for DDEC

Gents,
Two questions:
First, what was the first year for DDEC? Was it 1987?

Second, for the "Do it yourself" kind of guy is it best to steer clear of DDEC? Kind of like owning a 1969 Dodge and working on it yourself as opposed to the 1999 Dodge you need a computer degree for, if you know what I mean?

Tom, I purchases a GMC RTS bus years ago to convert. It was an '82 with the DDEC II system. After I purchased it I found that I could have boosted my 6v92 from 180hp to 350hp IF it was pre-DDEC.

Apparently you can do a lot with the machanical engines but on the programmable ones you're pretty much stuck with what you get. Most shops won't reprogram for fear of Government regulations and fines concerning emission laws.

They even outlawed the 2-stoke diesels here in Maricopy county (Arizona) for commercial vehicles. So I could not register the bus until it was converted then as a Motor Home it was exempt. Needless to say I've sold my bus earlier this year to concentrate on other projects, Like my 63 Bluebird conversion.

Michael, had that GMC been repowered? I don't think even DDEC I existed in 1982, and DDEC II was introduced in the 1987/88 time-frame. Note that I'm talking about when Detroit introduced it - I don't know what years Blue Bird made changes except that my 1990 with 1989 engine has DDEC II.

Blue Bird first used DDEC in the 1988 wide body pushers. I have a 1988 narrow body pusher and it has the mechanical engine.
