I usually keep a trap set in that compartment when I’m home in the winter. Have caught several there.

Good friend of mine could not start his old pick up truck one day. After a day of looking, he found all the wires chewed off the top of the fuel tank / fuel pump sender. He fixed that and all was well. It happened again a few weeks later. He figured mice. He did some research and found an old remedy. Moth balls in cut off stockings up on top of the tank, did the trick, He replaced them a few times and it never happened again. So if you can stand a little moth ball smell, maybe. Especially if it happens again.

I retract all my ideas. You left out one of the clues about the air freshener. LOL
