Default 84 FC Quivering Turbo Needle

We're on the road home and have the Turbo needle quivering since we left Saskatoon as well as lots of black exhaust.

Wondering if it is injector(s) or turbo? Or any other ideas?

I would suggest if the turbo pressure has changed from what it is normally, it is the turbo or a leaking connection between the turbo and the manifold.

Black smoke is caused by too much fuel or not enough air. Also it can be caused by injectors not atomizing the fuel well. Larger droplets of fuel burn on the outside but have no air to burn on the inside. It creates chared bits of unburned fuel (black smoke). I would not expect all injectors to fail at the same time, so look to the turbo. Could also be an exhaust leak ahead of the turbo?

Thanks for the quick response. The turbo pressure is staying about the same, just the needle rapidly fluctuating.

The exhaust sounds like a one cylinder missing.

It may very well be a bad injector shooting blobs of fuel which would result in black smoke and cut back on the power from that cylinder, but I am getting beyond my knowledge base here. I don't know if it would be apparent at the pressure guage.

It sounds like a bad injector, can you fix this yourself?

Thanks Gardner and Randy (and Vadie and Bill)

Well, we made it home. Will have the injectors checked out when everything cools down.

Good deal that your are home safe and sound.

NOW, you stop quivering, just like the turbo needle .

AHHH, I know what you mean, when the bird is sick, I am sick too

See you in a month or so.

hope its not a valve

when a boost gauge shows like this is can be hard parts let loose and the cats are known for weak valve stems.......
