Default Northbound route from Maggie Valley

Tracy and I have been thoroughly enjoying a week at Cross Creek but are departing Wednesday for another locale at similar elevation, high enough for nice temps. Does anyone have a recommendation? We are considering Linville Falls.

Also, is US 19 north from Asheville a bird-friendly route.

Thanks in advance,
Bill & Tracy

Cumberland Gap NP is one of our favorite stopovers when we’re in the area.

I go up to Spruce Pine often in my big rig. There is a lot of construction going on between I-26 and Spruce Pine on 19. You will be better served going east I-40 to Exit 81 and taking 221 north to Linville Falls, NC

Cross Creek is one of my favorite spots.
When you leave you basicly have 3 choices Any other way and you are going to be on some serious twisties! (Think "Bluebirds on the Dragon!")
Take 19 to 276 to I-40 and go east to Asheville (then 26 to 81)
Take 19 to 276 to I-40 and go west to Knoxville (Then 75)
Take 19 to 276 (The other way toward Waynesville) to 74. Follow "64 Truck" to Franklin or Murphy. Both have great campgrounds.

If you take option 2 I have heard that you can cut off some miles and avoid Knoxville by taking 32 and Cumbeland Gap Parkway. You get on it in Newport and it takes you all the way to Corbin KY. I have never traveled this route. I like back roads but have always just run 40 to 75 when headed north from Maggie

Look at the map and find the route from I40W over to I81N then take 32 to Morristown TN, Then pick up US25E the Cumberland Gap Parkway, very scenic, you'll miss the Knoxville traffic and come back out on I-75 in Corbin, Kentucky. I've done it dozens of times and it's good roads 3 & 4 lanes most of the way. John Finn & I did it together once.
Cumberland Gap NP is a nice place to visit. If you are coming through the Louisville, KY area we have a couple 50 amps sitting idle.

Highly recommend 25E as John suggested. Almost always use it when going north on I75.

Thanks so much for the recommendations Randy, John, and Jim. We will likely make our decision tomorrow based on weather. We love Maggie Valley and staying in one place for a week instead of our usual stick and move itinerary.
Extra thanks to you John for the generous offer. We will definitely take you up on that someday. I’d like to do some bourbon tasting in that area.

That was when I still had the Cat 3208 NA and I was pulling my trailer, the hardest part was pulling the hill up to the Bean Station observation area, after that it is a series of rolling hills. I have been using that route for years even before there was any four lanes and the highway went up over Cumberland Gap, now you drive through a tunnel.

I take I-40 west to I-81 north to Exit #8 US 25E (US 25 Byp / 32 Byp) and follow it all the way to Korbin, KY.
