Today I went to see the eye surgeon at the VA Hospital and September 5 is the date scheduled for the left eye cataract surgery, depending on how that goes, the date for the right eye will be scheduled.

Until then you can call me cheap or you can call me inovative but in an effort to help me read better I took a business card to place over the left lens on my glasses so I had to only use mr better right eye, it looks strange but it works

Cool

So it's about a decade back that I first met my cataracts in a most spectacular way. I was at one of the pre-party events for Houston's Art Car Parade; the venue had tubular UV bulbs in parabolic fixtures.

I looked up *into* one, and ... a fog came over my vision.
The reptilian hindbrain reacted -- vigorously.

I firmly grabbed my bootstrap and said, "Self, meet cataract." .... At my next eye exam, the opthalmologist declared that I had "normal progression of cataract development for my age and state of health."

Waiting is.... [And commiserations for John's upcoming procedure.]

Best surgery I have ever had was cataract surgery. Least painful and quickest recovery. I was driving that same evening at night with no glare or flare anymore.
I never missed an eyedrop before or after surgery.

I remember asking the staff assistant if this doctor was good. His answer was: "This is where the eye doctors send their parents." In fact, my doctor sent his Dad to the same doctor. Cost of surgery without health insurance was $4,000 per eye. Very glad wife and I had great insurance.

Tidbits:

1. If you live alone or are unable to administer the required postsurgical eyedrops, you should request a medicinal depot be inserted during surgery which lasts longer and is more efficacious than instilling eyedrops.

2. Often after traditional cataract surgery the iris plane is relaxed rearward which improves the eye's internal drainage system and decreases intraocular pressure thereby (coincidently) reducing risk of glaucoma.
