Default Virginia Roads

Has anyone on WOG drove highway 60 and highway 460 from Richmond to interstate 81? Is it a good route to avoid Interstate 64?

Most of 460 is limited access/4 lane. The key is to avoid downtown Lynchburg or Roanoke. 60 is quite steep and winding going down into Buena Vista. If you are just trying to get around Richmond, take 460 over west of town and then 15 North at Farmville to 64 West. Be sure to stop in Wakefield at the Virginia Diner for some peanuts!

Thanks Shane, what I am trying to avoid the steep climb on 64 west. Is 460 good road all the way to Lynchburg?

Yes, it is a pretty nice drive. If you are worried about the climb on 64 though, the one on I-81 from the New River valley up to Christiansburg is far bigger. A BMC with the Cummins engine should have no problems.

No idea how warm yours gets but on some long climbs in 100+ degree weather mine will start edging up over 200 degrees. I do not allow more than 205 degrees. I downshift and lighten up on the throttle. With less throttle and engine above 2,000 rpms I can keep the temps down. FWIW
