Thanks, John. I got 22 registrations overnight, so I guess I have to burn the midnight oil getting it up and running!

Registrations at 33 in less than 24 hours, very good response!

One thing I should have noted about the automatic replies for things like passwords: If you are using a spam-blocker, the automated system is not going to jump through any hoops to make sure e-mails get to you. You need to make sure that my e-mail address (at the bottom of every page on the BBirdMaps.com site) is allowed through to you, or you will not get your password.

The www.bbirdmaps.com site is now fully functional, with the first 24 members displayed as I type this. Early users found about a dozen bugs, which have been fixed; there may be a few more hidden somewhere.

The biggest issue I've been getting from members is "How do I find my latitude and longitude - I don't own a GPS?"

I've added the following to my instructions on the site:

How do I find my Latitude/Longitude?
This is the most often asked question. If you don't own a GPS device, there are available tools that can provide the information for you. One choice is to use Google Earth. Zoom in on your location, and read the Lat/Lon at the lower left. Google Earth presents Deg/Min/Sec by default, which is difficult, but you can change to Decimal Degrees in Tools/Options. I also found an online form at http://stevemorse.org/jcal/latlon.php that provides address-to-lat/long conversion.

Thanks Don - well done!

I hope that many more Bird owners and wannabees sign up. It’s really neat to be able to see where other Blue Bird people are - especially on the Google Earth map.

I’m sure it will bring a lot more Bird owners together than would have happened otherwise.

Even those who spend most of their time at their home should sign up.

Thanks again Don for all the work.

I like the idea a lot, given my personal situation it's unlikely I'll be moving any time soon. That said, if we were on the move we would use the system. When we were moving we always tried to hook-up with BB Owners, without exception they're a great bunch of people.

Everyone is welcome! Start here: http://www.bbirdmaps.com/AboutBBirdMaps.cfm and be sure to ask if there are any questions.

I find that the biggest issue is an understanding of Latitude and Longitude. Some people have worked with Lat/Lon all their lives, and to others it is completely foreign. Converting among the various notations such as Degrees/Minutes/Seconds, Degrees/Minutes, and Decimal Degrees is not intuitive, so I get a lot of questions from those who haven't done it before. After you've worked it out, though, it is pretty easy to keep up your location.

Those that aren't moving can update with two clicks - no data to enter.

I signed up on the map this morning and figured out that Jack & Liz where on our planned route today. Driving though the town that they where listed in we passed a bluebird in a RV park, turned around went back and it was them. We had a nice visit with them and there bird. Its nice to put faces with the names you hear on this site. So, thanks for your effort on the maps, its great.

I am very pleased that it has produced results for you so quickly! My motivation for getting the maps up and running was that I wanted to do the same thing - I figure I will pass a lot of the folks here in the 8000 miles or so I will do this fall, and this way I will likely get to meet at least a few!
