Default Another reason to buy a bird!

Just got home from a weekend in Michigan. Took my daughter up there for a wedding. When we got there my volt gauges went crazy. Called Coach-net Friday after 5 P.M. Are you safe ? Yes Do you want towed to a facility to sit til Mon? NOT REALLY! Can have a tech call you in the a.m. O.K. Mean time talk to Shane, ( THANKS BROTHER), George Morris and a few others. They all say disconnect the alternators, run the genny to keep the batteries juiced and go home when you are ready . O.K. Sounds like a plan. Call it a night. Coach-net tech calls in the a.m. His best option tow, and sit til Monday. I think I am going to disconnect the alternators and run it home 275 miles. Tech says " You won't make it 50 miles" Why? I have a bird,20kw genny,100 amp charger, and I won't be running any accesories (Common Sense). Well if you do you'll be the first! You need at least 11 volts for the trans ECU or it will shut down. O.K. I am home, gauge never dropped below 13 volts and my coach never faulted. All is well in Wanderland! Any body got any alternators they want to donate?

Do those have an exterenal regulator? If so, I remember Rick Archie, changing out his and someone else's at a LSB rally, because of similar problems. Of course, his is a '97. It is the 300a alt.

Hi Mike,

I believe you use the Balmar MC-612-Dual voltage regulator. It's a rather hi-tech microprocessor controlled device designed to truly load share across the dual alternators: http://www.balmar.net/2012-PRODUCT-GUIDE-WEB.pdf

Maybe Hisham Amaral will chime in. I know he's been working with the Balmar to customize the programming of his.

David, The 450 uses the balmar max charge mc-624-ln. I talked to Tom at balmar and he said to specify the LN when ordering as the software is specific to the leece-neville alternators. $440. and change from west marine and 3-4 weeks delivery! OUCH!
