Default governor

I removed the muffler from my FC before the trip to Rats. I noticed I could get to 67.5 MPH much easier than before. At 67.5 the govenor cuts the fuel supply and I have to coast to around 64.5 MPH before it cuts in.
Is this normal?

One thing to consider is that most of the time when I exceeded the governor setting it was after cresting a hill, and I likley went over the top rpm, but not by anything significant.(maybe 50 to 100 RPM) My tach is not very accurate and often varies 500 RPM at steady speed.

Gardner,

What rear end ratio do you have? Also, what tire size? My bus with 4.63 rear end and 12R22.5 tires will run about 74 all the way tached out at 2800 rpm. I can't get full boost above about 2600 rpm though. 2800 is the governed max rpm. 2600 is max full load.

Aaron,
I have 11R/22 tires. I forgot the rear end ratio, I would have to check the doc in the bus. It is likley the factory issue.

Somewhere on the Vintage Birds site there was a chart posted with different tire sizes, rear end ratios and max speed. I remember (because it is what I have) with 11R-22.5 tires and 5.29 rear end ratio 67.5 is the rated max speed.

In my 1983 I have a 4.89 rear end and use 2650 rpm as my top (redline) rpm which gives me 65 mph. The rear end tag is a placard inside the little door to the electrical transfer switch. Sounds like normal governor operation.

11R/22 tires too.

I wish I had a 4.63 gear set! Where can one be had anyone?

Likely 5.29 especially considering the speed that you mentioned. That speed is typical for a 5.29.....

In my 82 I wood run 2800 at 60 -65 depending if my how my trany was felling that day with 5.29 gears. I now that sounds odd but some times trany wood not lock up as hard unless I was fully loaded.
