Default mirror snappped off

We left Myrtle beach this morning on our way to Lake Anna State park in Virginia. A couple of hours into the trip I noticed the street side mirror was shaking quite a bit. I thought it might be the currents from the semi in front of us, so I slowed down. It got worse and then suddenly leaned left, I realized I had about 30 seconds to get off the road and stop before the mirror flew off and damaged a few cars in the left lane.

I pulled on the sholder over the sleep alert groves, which I hate to do on a 70 mph road, got out and got the all clear form Kathy so I could step out and grab the mirror. I pushed gently and it snapped off.

At the next rest stop I fashoned a clamp out of 1 1/2 inch pipe support straps (which I had for some unknown reason) and connected the 8 inch convex mirror to the support arm. It looks a little strange, but we were on the road again in 1/2 hour, and ate lunch as well.

Kathy documented the whole thing, but the images are too big. I will load up a couple of downsized ones later.

It looks like I should be able to do something with the remaining ball piece to create a new mount. I'll think about it whan I get home.

weird,we also left MB today at around 9:30.we got home around 6pm,after taking lots of back roads on the trip home, about 5 miles from home we stopped at a redlight and heard a grinding noise, checking the mirrors and the backup camera i could see the toad moving around..
Carol jumped out to re-direct traffic and I un-hooked the van,the factory welds on the base plate had broken and the van was barely hanging on.
Carol drove the van and I drove the bus home, tomorrow we will re-weld and brace the baseplate.

There might need to be a new award category for the Mrytle Beach Rally.
"Broke but Home" award.
I know of two contenders already!

I got the old shaft out of the mirror and took the socket unit out of the arm. Here are a few pics. The shaft is hollow, but pretty hefty before the rust got to it. The ball is rusted to the socket on the bottom, I am soaking it in PB blaster to see if I can knock it loose. If I can get the ball in a soft-jaw vice or use wood to protect it, I may be able to drill out the old shaft and then weld a new one in place Now to find material the right size.
I included a pictire of the right side, which needs replacement as well. When I get it done I will provide the source and size of the shaft, and if I can weld it or need a pro (depending on what the ball is made of)

Anyone know?

Also, While driving yesterday I heard a thud on the roof, I thought it might have been the antenna bouncing or somehting. Today I took a look, apparently the center speaker mount broke and the thud was the speaker hitting the roof. Pic attached.

This thing is falling apart!!!
