I noticed a drip at the front of the water pump during my last trip. It was slightly faster with the engine off and would leak a gallon in 8 hours. I tracked it back to the weep hole on the front of the water pump. After pricing a new one at $1000+ I opted to rebuild it with a kit from Dieselpeo.com. They sent the correct parts and even sent over a diagram to show how everything went together.
1. Use retaining ring pliers or needle nose to remove the plastic retaining ring. 2. Use a screwdriver to carefully pry the plastic cover off. 3. Use a harmonic balancer puller to pull the impeller. 4. Remove seals. I had only planned on replacing the seals and putting it back together but the shaft was scarred so I proceeded with a full rebuild. 5. Remove the 3 bolts that hold the water pump on. 6. Remove the snap ring under the gear. This took several tries as it’s reached through a hole in the gear. 7. Use a press to remove the gear. It came off easily with a 20 ton press. 8. Install new bearings on new shaft. Press on bearings and gear. 9. Install shaft in pump housing seat bearings and install retaining ring. 10. Install seals and cap with retaking ring. This was tough and required 3 hands. Could be done easier with a good set of locking retaining ring pliers. 11. Mount pump and install bolts. I also replaced all the hoses with silicone and changed out the gate valves with ball valves since I had a couple leaking. Here are some pictures that hopefully help if someone else has to do the same project.

Not a job for the meek. Did you remember to set the lash when you reinstalled the pump?

It was 0.02. I didn’t see that there was much adjustment though.

Check the gear lash between the water pump gear and camshaft gear after the pump is installed on the engine.
Check the gear lash by Installing bolts, or equivalent, in the impeller puller holes. Measure the backlash with an indicator at that point. The gear backlash setting should be .001" to .006" when measured in this manner. When the specified backlash reading cannot be obtained, loosen the pump attaching bolts and pivot the pump at the dowel as required to obtain the proper lash adjustment. Retighten the mounting bolts.

Wow! I've seen it done on YouTube. I knew they are expensive and a rebuild is the way to go. Good job.
