Default Adding oil through the resevoir?

Since you have to be aired up to add the oil through the reservoir, I have a question.

Say I check it and I would like to add two quarts. Then I crank the engine to air up the coach and therefore to air up the reservoir to pump the oil over to the engine.

1) Can I add the the two quarts with the engine running?
or
2) should I turn off the engine and while still aired up pump the oil over to the engine?

My auxiliary air pump won't get the pressure up high enough back there to air up the reservoir. Now that I say that I may not have tried that since I replaced the leaking pressure protection valve back there, but I think I have.

Thanks good to know. I just didn't want to shut the engine back off to do it if I didn't have to.

Are you saying I shouldn't do that or just being funny?

hi George
i have not used mine to fill while running engine don't think i would... i always check oil level after adding oil so engine is off anyway...but as to using aux. air compressor you may or may not get air back at air schrader/ pressure reducing valve,,, depends on where your aux air compressor is tapped into air sys. i believe i have a check valve between my aux air comp. and that air piping back at the bulk oil fill tank...i have added air back at air schrader and then added oil to my engine ..mike

I'm not sure if it would hurt anything or not but here's what the 94 Owner's Manual says:

OPERATION

WARNING

Bulk oil system is under pressure when the red light is
illuminated. Do not open the filler cap before making sure the
bulk oil switch is turned off (red light off). Open the filler cap
slowly to allow any pressure in the tank to bleed off before
removing the cap completely.

1. Run engine, if necessary, to build up on board air supply.
2. Shut down engine.

CAUTION

Do not run engine while bulk oil fill is in use. Place engine
compartment ignition switch in OFF or REAR to prevent
starting from the driver's area.

3. Zero meter pointers.
4. Turn on bulk oil switch.
5. Observe that bulk oil red light is on.
6. Push nozzle tab lock out of the way and depress lever until desired amount of oil is shown by meter pointers.
7. Turn off bulk oil switch.
8. Check oil level.

I had a slow leak in the auxiliary system that turned out to be the valve for the bulk tank, but even with that leak I had plenty of pressure using the aux pump to push oil.

Thanks John, that makes it very clear. I looked but couldn't find any verbiage on it in my owners manual. I must not have looked in the right place.
