Default Transmission retarder not working

Looking for ideas on why the retarder would quit working, otherwise transmission working fine. First thought, the switch, but this newbie would request help from those with more knowledge. Any comments/ideas would be appreciated. Nearest Allison repair shop many hours away. Thanks, Claude

Claude.i have never worked on the tranny retarder in the "classic" birds.
my first thought was also the switch.
then i wondered how the tranny knew you wanted it to brake, there must be a switch on the engine that tells the tranny when the engine is ideling.

You need to check out the cruise control and the retarder circuits since they are tied together. Most likely you just need to clean some parts. they are for the most part located on a plate just in front of the PT batteries.

Claude,

Mine quit earlier this year. The Allison shop said that a spring had broken in the "modulator" on the retarder. After the repairs, they handed me a small 3" by 3" box with a few broken parts and a $$$$$ invoice. The part apparently senses the position of the air throttle or brake and is supposed to modulate the degree of braking force in the retarder. Before taking the coach to them, I made sure that the dash switch and Bosch relay in the generator battery compartment were OK. Once it was established that the electrical signal was getting to the tranny, I handed it over to them. Otherwise the bill would probably have doubled.

Hello again from the guy with a retarder problem or it could be a retarded problem at least that's how I feel about now.

Seriously, I have sent private messages to both Shane and Tom (warbucks) and spoke with John (diesel01), but thought I would fish one more time for an answer to my question, which is, does anyone know the physical location of the ignition breaker, which provides power for the retarder master switch per BB diagrams? I have a 1984 1/2 pt36.

Again this morning the retarder worked for just a few minutes and the quit working.

Any thoughts would be most helpful.

Thanks to all, Claude

Claude,

My retarder is powered with a Bosch relay in the compartment where the genset battery is (under the driver's seat area). It drew it's power from the large electrical bus in the top of that compartment and was triggered by the brake lights. It can also be triggered with the manual lever, but I'm not sure how that works.

Hi Claude,

My understanding was that whenever your Retarder wouldn‘t work, the Retarder “ON” LED failed to work, the Rear View Monitor failed to work and the head light warning buzzer would sound if the head lights were “ON”. The Retarder not working seems to be just a symptom of what‘s going on.

If this is the case I would still suspect the problem involves the ignition switch signal. One clue is that the headlight buzzer should only sound when the headlights are on and the ignition switch is off.

I looked at how the ignition switch circuit works on my 91 Bird and besides going to the engine, etc., the ignition switch picks up a contactor or solenoid to indirectly provide the ignition "on" signal to a lot of other things so your's may work the same way.

If anyone has a schematic for an early 80’s Bird would you please take a look at the ignition switch circuit and let Claude know if his ignition switch picks up a contactor or solenoid to indirectly provide the ignition "on" signal or if everything is powered through the switch itself?

Thanks,
