Default Solution to PenFed VISA annual fee and rebate reduction...

I've posted this in another thread, but I want to make sure that all who have PenFed Platinum VISA card continue to get the 5% rebate and pay no annual fee. I called PenFed this morning and spoke with a customer service rep. They said that PenFed has come up with another way for VISA users to avoid the annual fee and rebate reduction to 3%. If you open a MONEY MARKET SAVINGS ACCOUNT with a balance of $25 or more, the annual fee and the rebate reduction WILL NOT take place. We continue to get the card without an annual fee and we still get the 5% fuel rebate . It took less than 5 minutes to get it done on the phone (800-247-5626).

Here is a copy of the email (dated 9/18/2013) I received from PenFed validating the Money Market Savings Account:

Thank you for contacting Pentagon Federal Credit Union.

We apologize for the confusion, and for any inconvenience this may have caused
you. Yes, as of 9/18/2013 the following qualifying products were added:

- Thrifty Credit Service
- Personal Line of Credit
- Educational Line of Credit
- Money Market Savings account

You may also open one of these qualifying products to avoid the annual fee:

- Active checking account with direct deposit of at least $250.00 per month
- Installment loan such as an automobile loan, boat loan, motorcycle loan,
personal loan, and/or educational loan
- Money Market Certificate
- IRA Certificate
- Equity Loan or Equity Line-of-Credit with a balance
- PenFed Mortgage

Opening one of these accounts will automatically upgrade your account to a Plus
PenFed Platinum Cash Rewards Credit Card and you will not only avoid the $25
annual fee, but also maintain 5% cash back on gas purchases made at the pump.

If you need further assistance, please contact us.

Sincerely,
Amber Frank
Pentagon Federal Credit Union

Neal, thank you keeping us in the loop. I opened my account using the PenFed site.

That explained why I didn't get a letter in the first place. I opened an account with them the day that I applied for the card a couple of years ago. I have never touched the money in there($100) and never thought I would use it.
