Angry $1000 Fine For Fueling At The Wrong Pump in AZ

Just FYI this is from another Forum talking about fueling up in AZ. Quoting the original post and a link to it as well. Looks like it is applicable to 'Birds so wouldn't want people caught unaware.

Yesterday I was fueling my toterhome at the Quick Trip truck stop on 51 Ave and I-10 in Phoenix. I was at the pumps marked "autos". I went into put down my card and the attendant told me I was at the wrong pump. I told her I am a registered RV. She said OK and off I went and started fueling.

Shortly thereafter two plain cloths DOT cops walked up and asked to see all my paperwork. They were very nice about it and explained that RV status in Arizona has nothing to do with which fuel(and therefore fuel tax) you are supposed to use. It only has to do with rated weight and number of axles. They then took me over to the pump where the fine print on a tiny little sticker explained that, auto diesel was not to be used in any vehicle over 26,000 pounds OR three or more axles.

They then said they were sorry but fuel monitoring was their only responsibility and they had to write me a ticket even though they knew I wasn't trying to avoid a tax.

They also stated that Arizona was the only state to have this law.

While I was there they also nailed a large 3 axle class A RV.

Again, Just FYI hadn't seen it mentioned here.

Arizona, previously, never enforced this tax on diesel RV's & trucks GVW>26,000 lbs. or 3 axles+. I knew it existed but never paid any attention because they didn't actively enforce the law. Good to know they are now actively enforcing so I can avoid fueling there (or if I have to, to hit the commercial fueling pumps). Thanks!

Not to beat a dead horse, but going from MI to TN, then West to CA on I-40 I was never sure which to use, the commercial or the auto lane. In one state, I used the commercial. In another I tried to use the commercial but was turned away to use the auto. Then in AZ I used the Auto - maybe I shoulda used the commercial.

Thats rough.

I was trying to use my fuel discount card in Indiana and they told me the opposite that I had to go use the auto lanes.

I always buy fuel in AZ and very seldom from "Truck stops" one of the truck stops I have bought fuel at is one exit west of where this post originated, Flying J at 67th ave, and like the other truck stops I have used it has a RV pump, which is just an easy access pump on the Auto side of the lot.
I usually get my fuel at the Fry's Grocery store near my house or one of the other stations in the area.

WOW.. lived here over 40 years and have never heard of that. Guess they leave me alone with my old FC with only two axles? I prefer the auto/gas isles as I have a gas genset and the big diesels pumps too fast so burping is a HUGE problem there.
