Default Perkins Genset output

Hello,

Starting poking around my genset and have found that the output is only 107 VAC.

It smokes and the injector on the rear cly is real noisy.
Seams like when it's warm I get a bit of a knock also, but not today for some reason.

Any chance I am running on 3 cly?

my question is what kind of Voltage is everyone else getting?

thx

Get the RPMs up to 1800 or whatever the book calls for and then Voltage should be up in the 120- 125 range...IMO the engine needs to be up to snuff.

Have you serviced the air cleaner and fuel filter?

John Finn may jump in soon...he's the expert on Perkins.

Air cleaner, fuel Filter, and oil change is on the short list. Just thinking that it's not running up to snuff and the smoke and noise is the result.
I agree that the maint. items may make a difference.
I don't remember seeing a tach for the gen, Am I missing it?

thx

NO EXPERT HERE, haven't you seen the opening page to my web site http://www.pbase.com/image/24977457 I just know enough to get myself in trouble at times

I think that setting the Hertz is more critical than RPM's, by adjusting the injector pump adjusting screw, which can(not) be seen under the safety wired tamper proof cover on the top left of the pump in this photo from my web site.

http://www.pbase.com/iamflagman/image/80456508

The cover was placed on there by Superior Diesel after they rebuilt the pump for warranty purposes and they pre-adjusted it and then re-adjusted it after I installed the pump and took it back to them, for the final adjustment. Tom Warner I believe can fill you in on more information about the proper settings, as I have never personally done this, but I believe that he has.

If you don't have the Perkins manual it can found and downloaded at Wanderlodge Owners Group > Frequently Asked Questions > Manuals and Files Stored in This Forums Software DATABASE > Index of Downloaded Manuals and Files in Forums Software Database > Perkins_Genset_Engine/ > PERKINS WORKSHOP MAN..> 01-Jan-2008 17:53 14.5M

the Perkins_Genset_Engine/ section has more information about the Perkins.

No tachometer on the Perkins, the Hertz has to be checked with a Multi- Meter with a Hertz setting, with the meter probes placed properly in an electrical outlet on your 'Bird, I just plugged an extension cord in the wall outlet just inside the door and had the meter plugged in right there at the Perkins for the technician to see.

I also had the injectors rebuilt shortly before I had the injector pump rebuilt, as it started to leak fuel. The Perkins is naturally noisy too. that is why I spent so much time on reinsulating the compartment, which you can see on my web site, it is considerably quieter than it used to be, but it's a Perkins so it still somewhat noisy.

it may indeed be running on 3 cyl.
sometimes a bad injector is noisy too.
and,if the rpms are down (and they would be if its running on 3) the voltage will be down too.
all you have to do to test that injector is loosen the line going into it,if the rpms stay the same, its not firing.
if the rpms go down, then it was firing.

Randy,

Just so I understand.

I just need to crack the fuel line to the suspect injector and listen to see if my RPM drop, I should see a drop in voltage also if that cly was running. If there is no differnce in the sound/voltage then the cly is dead.
I will take a stab at it tomorrow.

Thanks

I think we need a Perkins rally! Mine makes terrible noises, but seems to keep running and putting out. I haven't checked the voltage recently except to see it is in the green on my plug-in meter. Maybe this weekend I will put the meter on it and check. I wil let you know what I get , if I remember.
