Hi Clint. Jarhead???? If you elect to take 281 south to I20 west , ( like Ernie, I also think it's the best way), there is a Walmart in Weatherford on I20 at exit 414 on the south side. Good for overnight,,,, and if you give Kitty and me a call, we will come get you for supper 817-596-0278 Don

Wal mart is on the north side of I20

I don't get any Tuna Sandwiches either but he did bring me some Hyd Filters.

Now if I could just find someone to bring me some of those yellow Storage Boxes that KC is trying to peddle.

Clint. Don't make the Rookie mistake I made climbing that big hill coming east out of ABQ or you will be overheated by the time you get to the top. You can't just put your foot on the floor and let it lug down and shift to where it wants to be, like an automatic transmission car. You must select an appropriate gear and keep the engine RPM up in the sweet spot. On my CUMMINS, that is about 1600-1900 rpm.

My bus is a cummins with an Allison but I ----ASSUME----- yours will shift similar. anybody else feel free to chime in if I am wrong???

Just trying to help.

Also. Just slowing down and putting your flashers on will lower the stress level of getting up a big hill in a new rig. Don't worry about trying to stay out in front of anybody. Just beware, the right Lane is an exit only at the very top. You need to get in the center Lane just before you get to the top

Also. I always like to take the road less traveled if I have time. Turn South at Santa Rosa NM. Come down thru Ft Sumner then on to Clovis NM. Continue to Muleshoe Texas for free camping on the left on the west end of town. Continue down to Lubbock and Post Texas. Then Abilene. Weatherford is just a little more east and before you know it you'll be crossing the Mighty Mississippi.

The sweet spot on the Series 60 is about 1500 rpm.

Don, thanks for the invite - might just take you up on that. I'm still waffling on the route, would like to stay on divided 4-lanes as much as possible until I get enough stick time to feel comfortable in the coach. Staying on I-40 over to Memphis and dropping down on 78 may be the most newbie friendly route. Not sure, still sorting out the options.

Max, thanks for the tip on coming out of ABQ, center lane towards the top, don't let it lug down, flashers on to set expectations for those around me. Got it.

Question, since I'm not familiar with the sound of the S-60 will I hear it lugging or are the RPMs and temp the only clue? Thus when it gets around 1200-1300 (based on 1500 being sweet spot) go ahead and down shift? or down shift sooner?

Thanks again guys, appreciate it.

I alway tought that about Atlanta too. However, came through downtown north to south around 10 AM on a weekday last fall and it was no big deal.

DFW.... Looks a little more complicated .... Yikes

It's an option!
