I remember almost buying a 4Runner until the dealer checked and told me even though the transfer case has a neutral, the vehicle couldn't be towed 4 down.

Another source of 4 down towing is the Remcotowing website. These are the guys with transmission pumps, drive shaft disconnects, etc. For a 2000ish 4Runner 4WD Auto they state this vehicle needs a drive shaft disconnect. Same for a 2008 Lexus. For the Jeep Wrangler they say just tow it.

We have 2 Subarus. The tow'ed is a 2017 Forester with M/T (2018 was the last year for M/T). The other Subaru is the wife's '17 Outback that we leased. I'm considering replacing the Outback with a 2016/17 Toyota 4Runner. The 4Runner is close to Lexus GX under the skin but with less electronics and gizmos to break. Researching adding a driveshaft disconnect for towing before pulling the trigger.

I believe all Lexus products are manufactured in Japan. I know the Land Cruisers are also manufactured in Japan.

As you know, most Toyota labeled are manufactured in North America.

2015 GC, zero repairs or repairs needed. Admittedly driven relatively little - 12,000 miles on the Odo, a bit over 28,000 miles towed.

I'm 72 and have owned 16 cars or trucks, which is probably a low average for the folks in this group, but I like the GC the best of all of them. Still have my '07 Liberty as a second car, quite beatup after it was towed to Alaska, but the only mechanical issue has been the rear window regulators, something that never got fixed. Use them and they break. Several replaced under warranty, and a couple since when we accidentally use one.

1998 GC, bought new in fall of 1997.
4.0 I6 AMC Jeep engine.

Only issues:
-Rear end noise - had shim kit installed at 80k. $500. No issues since.
-Torque converter a little wonky in cold weather. I'm used to it.

All other work done was expected wear & tear...exhaust, tires, new radiator, new evap core for AC.

It's still my daily driver. 174k.

I guess these Jeeps can be hit or miss. I am skeptical of towing it TBH. May purchase a different toad.

Yes, of course, by all means, judge an entire brand based on one vehicle...…/s off.

Based on that standard I would never own a Chevrolet again based on my 1979 Silverado.

I will add that the 1999 Jeep Cherokee that I bought used in 2008 with 42,000 miles and now has 102,000 miles and has been one of the most reliable vehicles I have ever owned. Is it a perfect vehicle? No. However, it suits my purpose and has been a very versatile vehicle.

It has performed the following tasks:
It tows our boat.
It is a toad.
It was a daily driver.
It has been modified to be more capable off road and is used off road. (Lift kit, bigger tires, differential lockers front and rear, skid plates, etc)

If Jeeps are such junk why is the resale value so high?

Bottom line is you are entitled to your opinion as am I.

Here are my current Jeeps:
2001 Wrangler Sahara (toad)
2003 Wrangler Sport
2008 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon
2016 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon
2017 Grand Cherokee Summit (because the wife likes luxury and gadgets)

The Wranglers are cheaper to repair than any other vehicle out there. There are no plastic body parts that cost thousands to repair/replace in an accident. There are more aftermarket parts than for any other vehicle. The 4WD system is the most robust. And, you can actually still work on them yourself. Why would you buy anything else?

And they hold their valve better than most any other vehicle you can buy.
