Default Cummins Oil Consumption

I just added 3 quarts of oil to our Cummins engine. Using Shell Rotella 15w40 diesel engine oil. First addition since oil change 3,400 miles ago. Usage is roughly 1 quart per 1,140 miles. Does this seem high or about right?

Experience with our 3208 was if I filled engine to full on dipstick, it would quickly drop to about 1/4 inch above the "Add" line and stay there. Have others had similar experience on the Cummins diesel?

Eric, this consumption does seem high for an ISL, that being said it may very well be like your 3208 where it has a level that it will maintain, maybe just above add on the dipstick.
My experience with the ISM in my LX and the ISL in my M380 is virtually no consumption.
I am getting ready to change the oil in my M380 at 10K miles and it is down 1/3 of the way between full and add. I have not added oil between changes.
At the risk of offending many, I wouldn't use Rotella in my engine. We switched from Rotella many years ago in our truck fleet to a top quality oil and saw consumption and component failure drop significantly. Just saying

Ron, in our initial tests that were 100,000 miles each truck, we switched 3 trucks to Delo 15w40 and 3 trucks to Kendall Super D3 15w40. We kept the factory recommended oil change interval at 25,000 miles. (for Cummins ISX)
The Delo and Kendall trucks had much lower consumption than the Rotella trucks, with both Delo and Kendall being almost identical. Neither the Delo or Kendall trucks would use more than a gallon between changes where the Rotella trucks would use 3 to 4.
As a result of that test, which I will admit is a very small sample, I ended up switching the fleet to Kendall as we have a good supplier nearby. That being said I think that Delo is as good an oil.

I understand that these numbers are anecdotal but in 15 years on Kendall and countless millions of miles on 20 plus trucks we had no failures that could be attributed to lube oil, and never had a bearing or top end failure in 750,000 miles per engine. (which was the mileage at where I would usually trade them in)
In my coach I run Valvoline Premium Blue 5w40 synthetic, largely due to the fact that the coach sits for weeks at a time and the TBN (total base number) on a synthetic oil is much better and will neutralize the acids caused by combustion much better. The soot dispersion factor of this oil is amazing as well. At 10k miles the oil on the stick is clean.
BTW, this oil is recommended by Cummins.
Your results may vary

Jim, you are a brave man indeed to raise the subject of oil type. My experience has not been good whenever the subjects of oil, tires or batteries comes up. Nevertheless, I appreciate your sharing your information. I wasn't aware Cummins had a recommended oil brand and will seriously consider using whatever they recommend.

Brave or stupid Eric and I am thinking the latter!! I think that you will find that Cummins recommends more than one kind of oil and the Premium Blue is one of them. If I was you I would be reluctant to switch to synthetic not knowing what your true consumption is, as that oil is pricey. I would run out your change on Rotella and not let it go below the add mark. You may just find that it will stay there and consumption will stop?
If you do want to switch oils try Delo. It is widely available and many good shops stock it in bulk for oil changes.
